I-24 W, after the I-40 split coming into Nashville, I had to come to a complete stop in 75 mph traffic. The person in front of me was tailgating... and the person in front of them decided to 'serve them right' and stop completely on a blind curve. Luckily, I saw them monkeying around and I gave more than ample room and slowed down a bit. Coming around that curve, though, I had enough room to stop, but the girl behind me was changing lanes and didn't see that folks had stopped and pow. Lovely. I'm still waiting to hear from the adjuster on what it will take to get it fixed... but UGH, the chiropractor appointments are killing me. So a 12 year old Hyundai Sonata hit me at 75 mph when I was stopped... I would have expected more damage, honestly.

Same here, thank you. I guess it looks as though the frame wasn't bent, which baffles me considering how fast that car was going. Maybe it is, though, very hard to tell from what I could see on the outside.

 

Curious, with that type of impact, did any airbags activate?

 

No, they didn't. I was surprised, but since I didn't hit the car in front of me, I assumed that was the reason.

If anyone has any idea on how easily the Fit frame is bent, I'd love to hear from ya. I'm afraid that repairing this would take weeks.

luckily the fit is made with a rear subframe. cost about $800 plus labor. should be an easy remove and replace. subframe can be done in a few hours. don't know much about body work.

 

Ah, ok, that explains the frame diagrams I was looking at, ha ha. Thank you, that helps me out. I think if I had not known that and a shop said they were going to replace part of the frame, I would have thought they were trying to dupe me. I'm also glad to know that there is a chance the car will be repaired back to the safety of a new vehicle. Its only 6 months old, so I'd be upset if it were just crap for the rest of its life. I guess that's what people hope for, really, or just having it totalled since its overall easier. Thankfully, I got GAP insurance.

I'm seeing a chiropractor, actually, and will be for a while, but it could have been so much worse! I don't know yet if its going to be repaired or totalled out. I can't tell by looking if the frame is damaged or not.

 

I will say this much, if I have to replace my car, I'll get another Fit, but definitely not a dark color. The driver who rearended me said this color just blended into the night. Not that she wasn't admitting fault, we were just all wondering how we could have avoided the accident. So right now, I'm hoping there would be a blue raspberry somewhere still available for sale.

 

So far, the appraisal is $7K in damage. Now I need to figure out where to send the car for repairs. Anyone know how to find a reputable shop who will do my Honda justice?

Wow crazy story, I was expecting more damage like you said but I'm just glad you're ok!

 

First, check w/ you insurer and see if they have a preferred repair shop. With any shop, ask for info on their repair guarantees, and ask to see finished work. Google the shop, and see what customer feedback/ratings they've received. Hope this helps!

Thanks, everyone. It does pay sometimes to drive like a granny, ha ha. My insurance agent did have a recommendation, which was helpful. They had awesome reviews online, and with the Better Business Bureau. They will be getting a closer look at it soon to see what else might be damaged. Funny, so far, tailgating in one form or another has cost that other driver's insurance about $9K, from wrecker lot fees, doctor bills, and now car repairs. I'd hate to see what her new insurance premiums are after this. Funny, they reported the wreck to their insurance company as a one car accident - I guess they failed to realize that police reports can easily be obtained if someone else files a claim and you're at fault.

 

I'd want that car totaled out if it were me...looks too far gone to ever be 'right' again.

Hmmmm, could it be that they were trying to minimize the impact (no pun intended!) of their inattentiveness to driving conditions? I wonder if texting might have been involved??
