whine when moving off in 1st / 2nd

I have a 2009 Honda Jazz.

for a while now when I move off in 1st or 2nd suddenly or from cold there is a whining sound.
any ideas as to what it might be? clutch doesn't seem to be slipping.

Have you changed the fluid? Mine gets whiny when the fluid is old, especially 1st and 2nd.

interesting suggestion thanks - the car has about 50k miles on it, the whining probably started 10k before that.

service interval is about 80k?!

I should say that it's manual transmission

I believe the interval (if you don't go off the MM) is first change at 60k and then every 30k after that for the M/T.

Mine started getting whiny around 50k and I changed it at 60k. I change it every 30k miles now, regardless of MM. That may be excessive, but at $15 for the fluid and 30 minutes of my time (with beer) it's really not a big deal.

thanks - sounds like changing the transmission oil makes a lot of sense.

shame I can't do it myself as the local independent garage wants $140... But I don't have ramps, and am a pretty terrible mechanic

Most of that cost is the fluid. It's at most half an hour's labour. Have you tried a Honda dealer? They're actually really reasonable.

Be thankful you don't have a VAG DSG box. Fluid for those is $700+.

I'm moderately shocked. My fluid drop at the dealer was under NZ$130. Considering the exchange rate, that should drop it to around US$100, and considering we pay at least 20% more for most things, I'd expect it to be around US$80.

The DSG in my GTi gave me no end of trouble. I know one guy who had five different transmissions in the space of a year. He still owns a DSG. Swears by the 6 speed wet clutch, doesn't rate the 7 speed dry. For me, the novelty wore off really fast and it got swapped for a Civic Type R.

Still though. I live on an island 2500km from anywhere. And the nearest anywhere is Australia.
