Powering 12 Volt Switched Cooler

We have a 2009 Sport. We try to drink a lot of water and keep a supply of bottled water in the back, on the folded-down rear seat, where we can reach them. Problem is, they get hot on warm days and become unpleasant to drink!

I found a small cooler, which holds 12 bottles, runs on 12 volt power, and has a long cord with a cigarette lighter adapter. What I'd like to do is cut off the adapter, and wire the cord into the electrical system BUT, of course, it needs to be a switched connection: ON when the car is on, OFF when the car is off! Otherwise the battery isn't long for this world...

I don't want to run the wire under the car; around the seats, on the floor, under the mats, and up under the dash is fine. I'm just not sure how/where to wire it in to get a switched connection. Any thoughts on this? And be as specific as possible. I"m moderately handy. If I'm not comfortable with it, I'll pay someone to do it.

Thanks-

dave

Buy this.

Use a test light or DMM to find an fuse at the aux panel under the drivers side dash that is ignition on and off, preferably the actual cigarette lighter adapter fuse. Splice it in, done

Assuming you have one of those electric peltier coolers. How are they?

On the Fit, the lighter plug is switched, so you could simply leave it plugged in there all the time. If you have a GPS or cell phone charger or whatever to also plug in, you could get one of the multi-tap adapters (making sure it's rated for sufficient current for the cooler—some have pretty low current ratings).

Bass, thanks, great idea. Not sure what kind of cooler this is. Ripped off the plastic lid, holds 12 bottles, switches off, cold, and warm.

Drew, I considered that, but want to hide the wire. Already too cluttered in here!
