Cleaning Throttle Body

Happy New Year!

Two days ago, I went into my rented garage space to do an oil change and a throttle body cleaning. Oil change went fine, but when I looked at the throttle body, I paused.

Is there a DIY or walk-thru for cleaning the throttle body? Or can someone tell me how much stuff has to be removed to get to the throttle body to clean it?

To me, it looks like the following might have to come off:

1) The windshield wiper valance (or whatever you call it);

2) The battery;

3) The air box (which is really large, the air filter part connects to a huge thing behind it that might be a resonator or something);

4) The MAF sensor assembly and assorted plumbing.

Sorry to be so vague. But if is what it it looks like, then this could be a two hour job for me.

Thanks.

about right

You nailed it.....if you want to do it right, all that has to come off....

or

you can remove the battery and airbox, and try to get to it without removing the wiper arms, motor and valance. but I would not risk it....clearance is tight and you might drop a screw behind there.

Also since taking all of that out is a pain in the ass, it might behoove you to clean the air box and under hood scoop and check the coils and plugs (especially if you are over 80k)

Cheers!

@Santiad: Thanks for that feedback.

What a nightmare. More than ever, I wish I had a hardcopy OEM Service Manual. But I'll think this through a little more before I start unscrewing things.

Why not use a gas additive cleaner like Sea Foam? Besides most gas already has good additive cleaners in it already. Cleaning mechanically is just silly. More harm can be done than good.

Just never, ever liked the idea of that.

That's what an engineer at Chevron told me. In effect, he said that buying bottles of Techron was a waste since the Techron was already in Chevron fuel.

If you're in there that far (to get at the throttle body) why not check/adjust the valves and change the sparks. I know the list could go on and on but in this case I would think it makes sense. Cheers

Because I only have 24k miles on the car, but I agree with your reasoning.
