I have a '13 Fit with about 35,000 miles on it. Was sitting in parking lot at work 2 days ago w/ engine running. Turned off engine, big cloud of gray smoke comes out of what I thought was steering wheel area, w/ bad smell, like gunpowder. Thought it was an airbag malfunction, but turned out to be the A/C compressor. Dealer said bits of metal were all inside the unit & not only need to replace compressor but clean out all the little bits of metal that exploded in there. Dealer also said compressor should not have gone out that soon & they are looking for a bulletin to see if Honda will pay for it. If not, my extended warrenty will pay, but it's a bit over $1,000. Anyone else have experience like this?

 

I think this is in the "S** Happens" category. I've had 1 compressor just self destruct on a toyota years ago. They fixed it but it happened at about 20K so warranty covered it.

 

The Fit lives! Got the car back from the dealer. Warrenty covered replacing the compressor, etc. Boy the A/C works good now, which is a blessing when it's 112 like today. argh Dealer said the compressor has a high side & a low side; high side malfunctioned & basically blew it up. So they had to get all the little bits of metal outta there, new compressor, new freon, etc. Did get a free car wash (whoop). BTW, dealer is Bell Honda in Phoenix. We have the car serviced there. Oh, their lot is full of cars waiting for air bags. My car is on that list, will get a rental next week & wait for the bag.

 

Glad they fixed that for you, especially being in Phoenix, I'm sure you need it more than most!
