A/C compressor intermittent cycling
A/C compressor intermittent cycling
My daughter just bought a 2010 Honda Fit Sport A/T. It has 85k on it and we’re having a/c issues with it and that seems like a common theme with these cars…
We are working (DIY) through the a/c system and replaced the cabin air filter and then checked the refrigerant pressure with a AC Pro kit and found low pressure (15psi) so we we filled it to 32 psi which ended up taking the whole can. The real issue appears to be that the compressor and fans keep intermittently turning off and on like every 5 seconds or so.
The compressor clutch is engaging properly but then you can hear and see it disengage along with the fans stopping only to re engage a few seconds later. I replaced the compressor relay with a new Honda relay but still the same. The a/c switch seems ok as the green light is staying solidly lit.
I do have a factory service manual thanks to this forum and have read through the trouble shooting section but this intermittent
compressor cycling isn’t really defined there except under low refrigerant charge which shouldn’t be the case here as I am measuring
32 psi with the A/C Pro gauge while the compressor is running. The refrigerant doesn’t seem to be leaking as I rechecked it a week later and got the same 32psi reading.
I do see where there is a pressure sensor as well a thermal sensor at the compressor and that the ECU seems to control the cycling based on the sensors. We can’t afford to go to the dealer and I’ve been troubleshooting and wrenching for 50+ years (not professionally though) so I’m hoping to get it working without a dealership visit. This is the first a/c system that I’ve worked on though and when you add a ECU into the mix with no way to access its info then it is becoming more complicated with some expensive and hard to get at parts, so I’m hoping to narrow it down…
I did read many threads in this forum about various a/c issues with the Honda Fit but didn’t see the frequent cycling issue specifically addressed. Sorry for the long first post but I wanted to supply as much info as I’ve found so far while troubleshooting it.

I have an 09 Fit Sport MT.
Ac would work intermittently. It would blow cold and seem to be working fine then hot air. Or no AC then next time in the car cold AC.
Also tried compressor relay (I just switched it with one from the fans).
I my case the Thermal Protector (Thermal sensor mounted on the compressor) tested open - no continuity.
As a test I jumped it out (connected the two black wires together) and the compressor engaged and continued to run.
I'm waiting on delivery of the new Thermal Protector.
Might be worth checking - Good Luck!
