I have a electronic water temp gauge that I want to install. Where is going to be the best place to tap off the engine for the sending unit? Also, what thread would this fitting need to be, my sending unit is 1/8" NPT?

This won't help you but, it is something you might want to consider. I bought the Ultra gauge. It gives you many options for differnet gauges. I use it mainly for water temp, battery voltage, and mph. It just plugs into the odm port.

I pondered coolant temp gauge as well and settled on the Ultra Gauge. It is quite a nice unit mounted in the front quarter window. You might want to check it out.

How you liking the UG Pruav?

 

I like it. The one thing i wished it would display that it doesn't is the oil pressure.

You can set it up anyway you want. It can show up to six read outs on the screen. i have mine set to display Mph, battery voltage, water temp, fuel %, engine load, and UG internal temp.

I understand wanting to use what you already have on hand. I can't help you with its installation. The whole reason I bought the Ultra gauge was so I wouldn't have to mess with tapping the coolant system and run wires for the gauge. With the Ultra gauge you just plug it in and suction it to the small side window and then tie up the loose wires.

Are you going to want any other gauges in the future?

You might try posting in the general forum for more response for installing your gauge.

I have a ScanGaugeII, similar to the Ultragauge.

If you have a Garmin GPS, you can also use their EcoRouteHD dongle that plugs into the OBDII port. The GPS then allows you to view virtual gauges on it's screen.

There are OBDII Bluetooth dongles that will send the gauge info to your smartphone, as well. I think Torque is one.

If your really really wanting to see the water temp reading, there is another option by adding a water temp adapter to the coolant line. I did this on my BMW, since older BMW's have horrible cooling system's. I got my 52mm Water Temp gauge from Pro Sport gauges and got this type of adapter from ebay.

No pics??? I thought the same way, then discovered the UG that plugs into the OBDII direct and reads the vehicle systems. Pretty trick and $70!! 50 readouts, will show 18 of any in three screens.

upper rad. hose. i want to see temps exiting the block before the rad cools it. u can put urs after the rad to make sure its doin its job but ur temps will be really low on the gauge. the stock temp signal for the fans is on the bottom of the rad, this makes the fans not turn on till the rad reaches the correct temp, but the engine will be significantly hotter. i plan to find a plug and relocate the fan switch.

I hate not having a temp gauge and have been wanting to put one in. That adapter looks like an easy solution.

What reading is more important? Coolant temp going into the block or exiting? I would think exiting the block would be a more useful reading and I suppose that's why you decided to place the sensor there.

 

Most stock temperature gauges are on the upper radiator hose where it goes into the intake.

 

it doesnt go into the intake.... it leaves the block and goes to the radiator, then back to the block, over and over again. so i put it after the block before the rad, to see temp change inside the engine
