Lightbulb Under hood mods, something different!

So I added the K&N typhoon intake about a month ago, but then wanted to add to the looks of the Fit in the engine bay. I started by adding this to the mix, from Paragon Corvette Products, part #2961 or 2951, don't worry, you'll find it if you want one too. The emblem is HIGH quality and costs $9.00 a piece, but because of shipping, you may want to get a couple buddies to get one too to make it worth while. I paid almost $29.00 for two, one for me and the other for my buddy who installed my intake (he's got a Mazdaspeed 3)

This shot shows the other "bling" I added, the Mugen oil fill cap (yes, its the real one, nothing from China here!)

Some of your remember me having the K&N sticker just to the left of where my Mobil 1 emblem is, but it was too busy there when test "fit"ing the Mobil 1 emblem, so I thought it looked good right here, check it out.

I also did something else I've done to a couple cars I've owned, remove this and clean things up a bit under there!

Nothing earth shattering, but every little bit helps, right

It's different, I like it. You should send the pic into Mobil and see if they give you any free goodies!

Arrow Here's the site for the emblem

https://www.paragoncorvette.com/

As far as the Mobil 1 goes, well, I'll probably end up running the new 0w30 (green cap for "eco friendly) Mobil 1 as well as a Mobil 1 oil filter. It appears that the car is set up to go about 10k on an oil change but since I so believe in Mobil 1, it will probably stay in there for an entire year. As many of you know, the oil doesn't get that dirty, I know my car at 8,400 looked pretty good, better than any other car I've ever owned and if Honda thinks conventional oil has 10k in it, I say Mobil 1 has 15-20k in it, especially when combined with the quality, synthetic Mobil 1 filter with its extra amount of synthetic media and quality designed housing.

If anything a chrome plated valve cover would catch my eyes there. That reminds me how I chrome plated the radiator cover on my motorcycle long ago.

wait wait wait wait.... did i just see "15k to 20k miles" on an oil change???

why would you WANT to do that. I'd rather see someone change their crappy oil often than change their top-tier oil over long intervals. I use the Honda Genuine 5w20 (still from exxon mobil), and change it every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever comes first. Just because oil "looks" clean doesn't mean it is. I work on BMWs for a living and we've had to replace several engines from sludge because th customer followed the "BMW recommended service interval" of 15k mi. BMW oil is full synthetic from Castrol. I don't trust any oil for longer than 7,500 miles.

Besides, what are you gaining by "lengthening" your oil change intervals??? And don't say "it'll save me from buying oil and filters as often" because that's nonsense. $60 is cheap insurance when it comes to maintenance.

Ya I'm with BOM on this too. why risk hurting the engine? The factory has always said loooong oil and filter intervals because a trip to the dealer for a worn out engine to them means a new car sale

BMW - FIT is not a valid comparison. The "look" of an engine oil is not any way to judge its service life. I seriously doubt Honda is trying to sucker us in for engine rebuilds.

Respectfully - the engine in my FIT is a state of the art economy engine. To me, and many others, it represents what an automobile engine should be. The market it serves is a huge worldwide consumer market. It is designed to provide the "most" in the smallest package possible. It uses less fuel and oil per mile that most other cars on the road today.

It's the tip of the wave of the future I do believe.

Extended oil changes are something we need to embrace. The objective is to use less of a very expensive commodity. Today's oils are nothing like those of just a decade ago and the synthetics will replace dino someday. Their service life is outstanding.

If I follow the MM and use quality products the motor in my FIT will serve me well for a long time, that's all the moving parts. I'm at 6000 miles and still at 60% oil life. Does that concern me, of course it does - I am a product of the 3000 mile oil change generation. Do I embrace the technology, you bet I do.

If we don't start we'll never get there and why not start now.

Now if the other systems perform as well is yet to be seen, but Honda does, in general, have a stellar service record. I feel we have all made as good a choice as possibly in buying a FIT

Arrow I like this open discussion....

...and it started because of my little Mobil 1 emblem

I know the color of the oil isn't the "be all, end all" but I'm used to the turbo'd car I had before (07' R56 Mini) and because it was F.I and D.I. the technology was really new, especially to me. I did follow the Mini/BMW change interval, at first and went 20k on my first oil change. After some thinking though, I changed it every 10k. That oil was getting dark at about 4k and yes, I know its doing its job (oil) when it gets dirty as that means its pulling contaminents out. That being said, I changed my Fits oil at 8400 miles and it still had 15% left in it and it was only " a little dark" towards the bottom of the stick too.

Mobil 1 and some other synthetics have "extended performance" oils and honestly, I believe in them for sure. These oils don't break down like dino oils, I've seen tests written in mags and online as well as those who go even further by having there oil tested.....what do you guys think about those test I mean here I am posting about oil at 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night, how about the guys in the white lab coats that are testing used oil samples, I bet they're REALLY excited to do it, so again, I believe them!

I wasn't saying the BMW comparison was relative to our Fits, i was just saying that to prove that synthetic oils aren't invinceable even thought their performance advantages over conventional oils are evident. All i'm trying to say is there's no point in "trying" to go 15k mi on 4 quarts of oil (lol). Sure, Porsche stretches theirs out too, but they have a whopping 11 quarts to dirty in that time.

What i don't get is the people that take advantage of oil claims. Sure, under normal service it may last 15k mi... but what the average driver puts their cars through is not considered normal service.

Feel free to find the limits of your oils, and save the prescious liquid that we're running out of. But i won't be the one to use trial/error. I've seen others make the mistake, so i'm just fine with changing mine early

I'm done with this topic.

People are free to change their oil and filter whenever and with whatever they wish, I don't wish to enter those debates. They are never ending. Everyone has a pretty strong opinion and personal history and you aren't going to convince people one way or another...(whatever your approach and philosophy? I'd say just change it, if you are going longer than a year or 7000 miles? IMO your needlessly pushing it) but if you disagree...any you've been doing it for years...Okay...more power to ya...

But as far as following Honda or Maintenance Minder advice? "IF" the future ever revealed a trend of premature engine failures due to oil or filters being used too long because of misinformation given by the maintenance minder or Honda's instructions can you imagine the negative PR fall out? No way Honda wants that.

Plus I don't believe they (Honda) wants your engine to wear out so they can sell you a new car. First of all, your much more likely to switch manufacturers if your Honda engine dies early...secondly, most people when purchasing a new vehicle really aren't doing it because their current vehicle isn't viable...

Dealerships and manufacturers don't need a secret campaign of destroying their own product just to sell you another. It wouldn't work, and the psychology of purchase is usually based on other factors.

Are those black velvet things under the hood safe to remove? Will it make the hood paint peel over time because of the extra heat from the engine? Sorry for tr noob question, it does look good and clean without it tho

My understanding is those are strictly for sound deadening purposes to muffle the engine noises. If you look at most cars with faded or pealing paint, it is almost always the top of the hood, roof and trunk. And the level of damage is almost always the same on all three panels.

Direct sunlight and no wax fades the paint too, always a barrier of wax very little paint damage.

I can't seem to find the pics of my Mobil 1 emblem anywhere and its too dark outside right now to snap a pic. I got the emblem from Paragon Corvette parts, its a great looking emblem and completely covers the Honda I-VTEC on the valve cover and looks very OEM looking and NOT out of place under there

Now as far as the oil goes, well, the Mobil 1 0w30 and Mobil 1 synthetic oil filter goes in this Sunday and it will stay for atleast 10k. Those oil tests don't lie you know.
