The Official 16" Sport Wheel Weight

Sometimes simple questions get scattered across threads, with some wrong answers provided, which just spreads more confusion. There is no "proof" of the weight provided on the forum (like with a digital scale) of just the stock 16" wheel, but the answer is clear when cross comparing all the info from various people. Apologies for not copying the usernames to go with the quoted info, but it's all from fitfreak.

USDM stock 16" sport wheels:

"I weighed one on my digital shipping scale and if memory serves it was 17 lbs 14 oz."

"The stock 16x6 wheels we weighed are about 17.5 pounds each. There was a variance from 17.3 to 17.6 pounds surprisingly."

"Using some high power math I come up with 17.5 lbs for the stock wheel."

"Wheels (16" Sport alloy) - 17.6 lbs (*Indirectly calculated by weight subtraction)"

With stock tires and 16" sport wheels:

"36 lbs, and that double checks with tire rack listing the dunlaps at 18, not sure about the bridgestones"

"Sport 16" wheel w/snow tire that weighs 2 lbs more than the stock Dunlap calling this 36.69 lbs should be very close"

Of interest:

JDM RS versions:

"stock 16" rims came in at 9kg & the Bridgestone ER370 at 8.2kg." (19.8 and 18.1 pounds respectively for total of 37.9)

Thanks for going to the trouble - I had been incorrectly using a 19.75lb weight that I ran across "somewhere". This is information I personally find very useful because I do want to know what weight savings I might get by replacing stock wheels & tires. Now I'll just gripe about the time spent finding aftermarket wheel & tire weight listings, as most websites aren't as helpful as Tire Rack.

I recommend calling the manufacturer directly for tire weights (if not listed on their product specs page).

Hayden, are some of those quotes take from ***Official GE parts weight thread***? I couldn't remember if we got a pic of a sport wheel on the scale or not.

I think some of the quotes are, but I never spotted a pic of them on a scale like a lot of the other items in that thread.

Thanks, guys. I now know just enough about wheels and tires to really confuse myself. I do want lighter wheels, but for reasons both economic and marital want to put the OEM tires (I know, I know) on them. That really complicates things. Or simplifies things. I'm not sure which.

That seems weird, the stock sport setup would seem to be pretty light from the get go. Everywhere I see people saying to lose weight thru lighter wheels, but it seems like the gains would be marginal.

Unless you get the right tires, the improvement is minimal, yes. With something close to the stock weight, combined with a tuner style wheel, the change should be very noticeable.

Sorry for reviving this Zombie thread...
But rule of thumb is 1:7, for every one lb of weight off of unsprung weight it is equivalent to 7 lbs of sprung weight. Lighter wheels make a HUGE different, especially since our cars don't come with alot of power.

Also I read that the rear sears are something like 300 lbs. Wow...

EXTREMELY unlikely those rear seats are 300 pounds. they dont have much meat on em and that would be a serious hazard in a car collision given the few bolts that hold them down.

Especially for that small support bar that snaps in the floor when they are in seating position. That thing would buckle under the forces of driving over bumps and having a passenger in them.

The rear seats weigh approximately 75 lbs. I weighed them on a scale. In fact, I weighed alot of parts off the GE and posted the results in a thread called ****Official GE parts weight list****.
