Anyway to get around cargo cover?

I have a 2016 EX-L Fit and I am trying to get a cargo cover for it but it seems very steep at around 200 (lowest price I could find) for something that looks like its made out of styrofoam. I believe the 2015 cover will fit the 2016 but I was wondering if there are any other cheaper alternative covers that are good quality that will fit my fit?

Some of us including myself have gone the DIY route because of the expense of the OEM one:

https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/3rd-...rgo-cover.html

Take a look at those threads and you'll get some ideas.

The 2015 should fit the 2016, as there aren't any major changes.

Thank you very much. I will definitely look into this.

You're welcome. I think I spent around $30 in materials and a few hours to do it. I had to go back and re-enforce it because it bowed, but since then it's been fine. If I had to do it again, I'd probably extend the back a bit so it sits more flush with the hatch but at this point it's good enough.

Regardless that you buy it or make it, you'll need two special clips that attach to each side of the door. These are for the ropes on each side. They do not come with the cargo cover. The OEM cargo cover seems pretty thin but has a built-in tray on top, stiffening the structure. $200+ is a lot so I'll make one if I think I need one.

Alternately, buy a black blanket to cover your stuff. Then you don't need the clips or make the cover, and it is very flexible.

The hooks are the only things I bought from Honda. They were really inexpensive and I was ordering the leather shift knob for my EX already. I thought about using a paperclip, but I wanted a more finished look. Then I just used black paracord and heatshrink to lift it up.

Did you use double or triple-wall cardboard? What did you reinforce it with after it sagged?

You can see more details on the threads I linked up top, but this is the post specifically: https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/fit-...ml#post1317617

I used foam board that I bought at Michaels and I also doubled it thinking that would be enough to not sag. After about a week, it started sagging, so that's when I went back and used the curtain rods.

Also used some paracord so it tilts with the hatchback now:

Not a pro at this kind of stuff, but good enough to fool my brother-in-law into thinking it was OEM at first glance - HAHA

Home Depot general cargo mat

If your not too fussy for exact contoured dimensions, for my 2015 EXL, I was satisfied with these for $15.

HDX | HDX Cargo Utility Mat - 46.75 In. x 31.75 In. | Home Depot Canada

Why not just tint the glass?

Tinting would be expensive too. Plus I want to tint all my car not just the back window but I don't have the money for that now. I also have a nephew who rides in the car and always throws stuff back in the trunk area he finds under the seats that he can't reach back and grab again and a cover fix would stop that.

Yup tint in my area runs about 250 - 300 for whole car. I'll eventually get it done but the cover was a cheap and easy upgrade

get ur windows tinted. only needs 20% (factory look) and u are done. cargo covers are a pita, i speak from experience on my GD and GE. just get the tint and also maybe some black fabric to cover your items if parking for long durations.

I just keep a couple of dark blankets in the back. They're handy to cover anything you don't want visible. Or you can wrap something fragile in them to carry it.

If you're traveling in winter up here, you should have some blankets in the car anyway. They just might save your life.

I was all set to do a DIY car cover but for me, the blanket is more convenient. Loading and unloading stuff with the cover is a pain in the butt.

I guess I don't really think the cargo cover is inconvenient or a PITA to remove. It's just two strings off the hooks and I pull out the cover with my home brew setup. I think it takes all of 10 seconds if that. Not sure about the stock one if there is more to do. Plus since mine is only about half an inch at its thickest, it's pretty easy to store to the side of the rear door (Even with the seat folded down).

Good call with a blanket, I have one in the car. Plus a two person tent that just fits in the cargo area with the spare tire!

The stock cargo cover is simple to remove - it's just one hook on each side. I went to IKEA today and took it off in a couple of seconds to fit my stuff in there.

This is word-for-word what I was thinking. The only time a cargo cover seems important to me is when I am traveling with suitcases in a rental car. This anxiety is probably because I don't have the blanket from my own car.

Here's another vote for the dark 5' x 7' blanket--in our case in purple.

Yah but u still need to place it somewhere in the trunk. That's a pita if u asked me. Tint + black blanket/fabric is the way to go. Even with a flash light can't see inside at night very well.
