Oil change intervals?

Got a 2016 EX about 2 months ago, and it didn't come with an owner's manual. The dealership did an oil change (synthetic) just before I picked the car up, but they didn't reset the oil percentage thing in the dash. So now it's saying a need an oil change when I don't (yet).

My question is how many miles or km should I wait before doing my next oil change?
Last change was done at ~35,000km (22,000 miles). We're at 40,000km (25,000 miles) now.

Thanks

7500-10000 miles for normal driving sooner if you are driving in severe conditions. I always went by the maintenance light so once it’s changed again reset it and just use that.

Some people go 5k miles.

Okay, so reset it now. You've gone 5000 km. See how long it takes to get to 90%, 80%, etc. Then you can figure out roughly what percentage 5000 km would be, and go from there.

I do 5000 mile intervals. With that said, I've had my oil analyzed by Blackstone and they said I could go longer. 7500 would be good.

I can't comment on miles per change, as I work 3x12hr shifts per week, and work is maybe 3 miles away, if I take the long (fun) way. So, I don't rack up near 10,000 a year. I do mine once a year in the fall, probably 7000 miles-ish, I guess, at most?

And yes, everybody has an opinion on this subject.

Use Mobile 1 synthetic. You only need to change annually. To be safe every 5-7k miles. Go to YouTube to see how to reset the idiot light....its easy.

Yes, there is definitely a range if viewpoints on this. My non-dealer Honda specialist recommends every 5k miles because, in his opinion, the oil degrades faster than, say, cars from 10-20 years ago due to blow-by gases that get into the crankcase that leads to contaminated oil and decreased oil effectiveness...this being due to the use of piston rings in modern cars that have a low "tension" to reduce friction in an attempt to increase fuel mileage.

This blow-by-contaminated oil then gets recirculated into the combustion chamber via the Positive Crankcase Ventilation system which, combined with direct injection, increases the accumulation of deposits on the intake valves.

Mechanics can be notorious for recommending sonner-than-necessary oil changes to get an extra buck, but those reasons make sense to me.

add oil catch can -----> catch blow by -----> avoid excessive 5k oci -----> profit

Yeah, true. I need to get one of those. But the oil still becomes contaminated and affects it lubricating ability, right?

Get it tested! Only way to know for sure.

6k miles on my carbon prone, direct injection, OEM pcv turbo engine and my oil was holding up great!

Newer cars and oils have come along way also and now run cleaner and lubricate better. Oil is cheap insurance though.

We've already saved so much money by buying a Fit, that who needs to stretch the oil change interval for the sake of... what, $10-20/year? Change the oil when the light says it's time, and get on with your life, is my philosophy

That was my philosophy with my Fit. Never got a chance to send a sample out but I was confident that it would have passed with flying colors.

if youre referring to the oil in the catch can, thats a non factor as the user would regularly dump out the oil caught in the can.

who needs to stretch oil change intervals? lets hear it from the guy that drives 30k annual

assuming we all follow MM or 7500 oci, cost would be $31.65 x 4 oil changes annual = $126.60 (assuming you buy oem filters, and mobil1 from walmart). I wont bother going into state tax, since we all live in diff parts of the world. doing my oil changes at 15k, literally saves me 2x annual. I plan to keep this car for 10 yrs, thats a savings of $1266 ($1376.77 with ca tax)

$8.77 - 15400-PLM-A02 filter
Amazon Amazon

$22.88 - mobil 1 5w-20 oil

I have samples at 7500, and 10k posted in my main thread. next sample will be at 125000. after that one, I plan to do a final sample at 15k. so far, things are looking promising

FWIW, my past cars (subaru wrx and sti) both have samples at 3k, 6k, 9k and all have shown that it was perfectly safe to stretch oci's

Since an oil change is 3.5 QTs, the price per oil change is lower. The oil you linked is priced at $4.576 per quart. Since you need 3.5qts for an oil change with filter, then it's $16.016 for the oil, but lets say $16 for simplicity. So really it's $24.79 + tax

Then every few containers of oil, you'll have enough left over to not even need to buy the oil I just changed mine over the weekend and this was my scenario. Just bought the oil filter! This one for less than $5!
Bosch 3323 Bosch 3323

And to stay on topic, I just use the MM. I'm getting about 8500 miles before the 15% warning comes on.

Hi,

Any test results to back that up?
