title pretty much says it all... uncertain why it's a thread of its own, but "whatever", i present to you:
gk5 oil pan bolt/washer after ~42 oil changes


..needles to say i replaced it with a fresh one with the last cycling of oil/filter...

 

That bolt and washer have seen some things...

 

The washer is supposed to be replaced with every oil change. The box of Honda oil filters I have all came with a new washer taped to them. The box of Purolators I have didn't so I bought a bag of washers. I have over the years gone multiple oil changes with the same washer - with various cars, copper, paper and the Honda aluminum washers - but do that less and less now.

The bolt shows some wear. Maybe your socket doesn't fit so well or has a bit of wear itself. The more important thing is the threads and there is no cross threading.

 

..interesting... this is news to me, though i guess it makes sense. i've used mobil-1 and k&n oil filters for the life of the car and they've never come with a washer either.
...yeah Harbor Freight ~17mm socket... lol

 

An oil filter may fit a variety of cars which may have different washer types and sizes specified by their manufacturer so you can't really include a washer (which one?) with third party filters like K&N and Mobil1. But with a genuine Honda filter it's obvious that the filter is intended for a Honda car and thus the Honda specified washer can be included. The Honda one is just stamped from aluminum sheets, there's no plating or anything. I bought spares on Amazon to use with non-Honda filters and to replace the occasional one I drop on the garage floor and can never seem to be able to find again.

 

This is why I extract from the dipstick tube.

 

The first time I changed my own oil on my Honda fit, I damaged the oil drain bolt with my 17 mm wrench. They had it on so tight from the dealer's first oil change, I couldn't get it to move without some serious muscle, and my first go didn't have perfect fitment, so it bent the corners a little. Thankfully I was able to get it off, and it will be replaced with an entirely new drain bolt next oil change.

 

Señor woof is correct, as usual. It's a pretty soft washer, and it's designed to be "crushed" a bit. And you can only "crush" it once. 'Cause, you know, it's "crushed."

I wouldn't let that bolt, or any bolt, get rounded off like that. You're asking for trouble if you do.

 

Had to use the extractor for the 2nd Gen FIT due to drain plug being rounded by previous shops . Got it from Harbor Freight and works great .

 

Yes, replace the gasket every oil change and yes, every time I've gotten the free first oil change from the dealer they've overtightened the drain bolt. Sometimes the filter too or maybe they just didn't put oil on the rubber gasket and it fused to the car.

For my previous two cars I got an oil drain valve (Fumoto or similar) but for this car I didn't bother since I figured with an oil change only roughly annually and the plan to keep the car only six years it didn't seem worth the bother. Of course now three or four oil changes later I wish I'd done it at the first oil change.

 

I've found that not only does the dealer overtighten the bolt, but slightly over fill as well as well as every other oil change place ..... am capable of doing my own oil changes, but don't like to deal with the possible mess and the oil recycling afterwards anymore,. I would think the dealer, if anyone, would fill to the proper level and no more, but, then again, that opens the can of worms about the stupid plastic end of the dipstick ..... a simple high and low level notch in the metal would be easier to read, but, hey....am old and grumpy

 

The drain plug is supposed to be tightened to 29 ft-lb but I'd be very surprised if any Honda (or any where else for that matter) tech would use a torque wrench for this as opposed to say "gut feel".

As for the dipstick, I used to be a nice person, young, carefree, happy in the world, until the first time I tried to read the Fit oil dipstick level. And now I'm old and grumpy too.
