Check Fuel Cap

Check Fuel Cap warning on the right-hand started on my 2019 Fit LX. Anyone figure out a solution for this when it's random (for me)?

2019 Honda Fit LX @ 25K miles - Check Fuel Cap error takes over most of the right-hand indicator.

I did on Tank 1 last week (3/4 full) with temperature 84F. I shut off the car and opened then closed (to 3 clicks) the fuel cap and turned the car back on thrice to no avail (drove home and had the alert on the entire time). The next day the alert went away - drove to work. This week (new fuel in tank at 1/2) the fuel cap alert came back. Shut off (then opened/closed the cap to 3 clicks) / turned on the car 4 times then drove home from work. Alert stayed on until the morning drive to work today.

The alert (as shown below) alternates CHECK then FUEL CAP and will not show any of the information normally displayed in that area until the alert goes away.

If it's not a bad or loose gas cap, then perhaps a problem with the evaporative system. If the car is still under warranty, I'd take it back to the dealer to fix.

You aren't over-filling your gas tank, are you? You should never try to put more gas in after the first time pump automatically stops.
Other than that, it could be bad cap or EVAP system problem as bargainguy mentioned.

Yes taking it in - if nothing else for later documentation reasons. Here's what the full manual has to say for documentation reasons:

Not to offend your opinion topping off, I top off all the time without any car issues. That's is real not just an opinion. Let see, I've been driving over 58 years.

No offense - I do top off ~ 0.3 US gal and have been doing so across many cars all my life ~ 500000 miles in total across cycles and cars.

I did stop each time the alert came up and:
  • turned the car off
  • opened then closed the gas cap until 3 clicks
  • turned on and off the car 3 times (leaving a few seconds in between)
  • drove it ~ 15 miles+ (home from work)
Each time it came up I was mid tank (meaning that I filled up a few days before, drove it with NO ALERT, then the alert came up with no changes in touching the cap. Said differently the alert did not occur - on the full tank or immediately after refilling).

I did file an issue with NTHSA on recalls.gov (USA)

For those saying you top off the fuel tank and you've been doing it since 1929 with no issues:
1. It's relatively recent that it's an issue.
2. I've been wearing seat belts for fifty years and not once has it saved my life. I'm still wearing them, because one day it may, but only if I'm wearing it. Some people don't change their oil when they're supposed to, or drive on improperly inflated tires, or drive drunk. Not everybody suffers consequences. Still a good idea to do what's advised.

Its pretty clear after a quick google search that topping your car off with fuel does more damage than helping you by squeezing a few extra cents into your gas tank. Read people read. And that for sure may have everything to do with the "check fuel cap" problem.

"I've been driving over 58 years."

That clearly didnn't make you any smarter. Because topping any car off isn't good for your fuel system. smh

It was the fuel cap (same issue on my 2002 CRV). P0456 OBD-2 code pending. Cap test failed and Evaporate test OK. Honda dealer replaced existing fuel cap with gas cap Honda part number 17670-T3W-A01.

So overfilling or fuel tank level is likely not the issue.
