Another Oil Change

I just changed the oil in my son's car, a 2020 with 50k miles. Every time I change the oil in his Fit or mine, I wonder who the idiot was at Honda who designed the rear attachment for the splash shield - a small plastic screw inside a plastic nut, with nothing to keep the nut from turning. I use a different arrangement on my 2015 - those snap-in plugs that hold some body parts on. Before that, I used a pin with a clip through it. Since I couldn't remove the second plastic screw, I pulled the shield back from the front and rotated it out of the way.

I buy the oil in 5-quart jugs, and I fill them to the level that the Fit wants. I have a mark on the outside of the jug, so I know when it's right. When I refill the engine, I just empty the jug without checking the dipstick.

Having the car tell me when it wants servicing is great. I never wait till the last minute to change the oil, but it's better than changing it every three months/3,000 miles.

When does the maintenance minder usually come on? Mine has gone about 1800 miles and seems to be stuck at 90%.

It's based on several factors - mileage, time, driving conditions, etc. Daily stop-and-go in very hot or cold weather will require more frequent changes that occasional steady highway driving, which is more or less what I do. I've gone just 3,000 miles since the last change in July, and it's at 80%. I'll change it at 20 or 25%.

I ordered two five-gallon jugs of synthetic oil and six filters (lower price for six) yesterday for a little over $100. Ouch! It's more than a coincidence that the price of oil and filters has risen as the frequency of oil changes has declined. I used to buy oil by the case (24) for $0.50/qt., and filters cost a dollar.

Everyone has good ideas in changing oil. I never check the oil level. I put in 3.5+/- using the tick marks on the 5 qt Mobil 1 jug. I don't have the undercover issue because It stayed off permamently after the fisrt oil change. Those who think I get noticeable reduction of mpg shared an unfounded opinion. My 2017 LX CVT at 115K miles still run perfectly and I am able to consistently get over 40 mpg on the highways. I can also reach both the filter and the oil plug without putting the Fit on a ramp. So, it takes me about 15 minutes to change the oil/filter. The Fit is the most reliable car I have ever owned. I am not happy that the new generation is not coming to the US.
