Found a few holes in the stock vinyl shift boot, so I took it apart, steam ironed flat the pieces under a towel, traced them onto a sheet of leather and sewed it up.
As for the staples, after removing them I drilled holes in the plastic tabs and zipped tied the flaps to secure them through the drilled holes.
While I was at it, I installed an aluminum collar too.
