Tick, tick, ticking (engine)

Perhaps I'm being paranoid because of some of the little things here and there people have noticed about the 2015 model, but does anyone else getting engine ticking? I've got an LX MT. When I'm inside the car it's not that noticeable, but if the windows down and I'm next to a car at a light I definitely hear the ticking, and certainly hear when I'm standing outside the car. I've been driving a 2001 VW for years, and I've never had the pleasure of owning a brand new car, so perhaps the ticking is a "breaking in" thing? Or, the ticking is par for the course for the Fit engine?

The Fit otherwise seems to be driving okay (although I noticed that the "low temperature" coolant light seems to be staying lit for a couple of minutes when it previously never lit up at all). Also, we really don't drive that often, so I just broke 100 miles on the odometer. And I've taken pretty easy on the engine thus far.

Sorry if this is a rather irrelevant thread. I looked to see if there were any other posts about this on the 3rd gen forum, but didn't see anything, and I'd love to find out that I'm pretty way too sensitive. Thanks for any insight.

Hi Sam_Sneed,

First, congrats on the new Fit. It's truly an awesome car.

You have nothing to worry about. What you are hearing is the Direct Injection from the engine, which is a new feature for the GK5 Fit. Virtually every engine that has DI emits a ticking sound. In fact, having sold brands other than Honda, I can tell you the others are much more pronounced (louder) than you are experiencing now.

Don't expect this to go away. There's nothing wrong with your car. Think of it as a reminder of the fact that you have a few more ponies under the hood compared to previous Fits

Love for you to share some pics of your new ride. All the best to you!!

Check this thread here: https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/3rd-...ine-sound.html

You can definitely hear the DI ticking in the video.

Phew. Glad I found this thread. I have had my car for a week and was planning on bringing it in to the dealer this week to ask if my engine was junk because of the sound.

By the way, what does "GK5" mean in the context of "GK 5 Fit" used above?

And about that cool engine light - mine is on (even during the hottest days) for the first minute or minutes I drive. Is this fine?

Normal. The light goes off when the engine reaches a more proper operating temp. Similar to how other cars with the temp gauges would be showing low until properly warmed up.

GK5 is the chassis code for the car. Look at your vin number and you will see GK5. It's how car people classify car models in a shorthand version.

Thanks to all for putting m mind at ease. I think I read something about the DI thing a while back, but didn't know how loud it really was. Also glad that the blue coolant light is par for the course.

After being told by someone form Honda America that my VIN was part of the "wrong airbag trim on the A-pillar" thing, and the learning that my 4/14 build date probably means I'll need to go in to get the bumper welds done, I was getting a bit on edge about the new car.

Of course, I checked my A-pillars and they both have the SRS Airbag language, so I assume the dealer fixed during the PDI. Now I know I don't need to fret about the the engine noise/blue light. I'm cool with the bumper welds (assuming my VIN is in the affected group) if I have to do that later in September.

And HondaGeek, I will try to remember to take a couple of quick shots of the LX. It's the metallic grey color. Other than the full load of NYC parking protection (bumperbully in the rear, bumpshox in the front, cheapo Amazon door edge strips for sections of the door), the car is pretty much stock. I did buy the OEM cargo tray and floor mats (again off amazon). I wanted weathertech, but didn't feel like waiting any longer. Not terribly impressed with the OEM tray/mats, but they'll serve their purpose I'm sure.

Thanks again for the responses.

Yup. In the real world and the Initial D world, lol.

Your most welcome. And would still love to see some pics. Wow. Have to protect those NYC Fits!!

Heh. I too wondered what the ticking was, though I wasn't too concerned that it had a problem. My 2011 Sonata did it at as well, though louder, and I had never understood why until now. Just looked it up and that car was Hyundai's first to be offered with direct injection.

Indeed. I had a short stint at a Kia dealer and the Optima(Sonata's cousin) had a very noticeable ticking due to it's Direct Injection.

Hi Fit Freaks - I just got my fit last Tuesday and I am trying to get a feel for whats normal. The hardest thing to adjust to is a persistent ticking or clicking noise. I saw in this thread that that is normal for direct injection engines, but those references are usually in the context of idling. Have others noticed it while driving too? I can't hear it with windows up or music on, but very noticeable with windows down.

Is this normal? Thanks so much for your help! One extra reason I got the fit was the good community behind it.

Cheers!

Having had a Mercedes 200D back in the day I'd say that the Fit's injector sound is mild by comparison!

I guess any pre-Bluetec era MB diesel would have a sound profile very different from the current generation DI engines produced by any vehicle manufacturer. Current MB Bluetec diesel engines are virtually indistinguishable, and often quiter, than many direct injected gasoline engines. In fact, the DI chatter coming from the 2015 Fit is very noisy, however "normal" one may deem it.

I'm sure the engine is operating as designed. Long-term carbon deposit and fuel-pump longevity issues could be more realistic issues to be concerned about than the lifelong DI chatter of this type engine technology.

After a valve job at 800 miles my ticking noise went away. Car was running rich and miss firing on 3 cylinders. I could hear and feel the miss fire at idle with the ac off. Good as new and now quiet too.

When you said you felt the misfire what does it feel like? Sometimes when I am stopped at a light I feel the car move a bit as if a car lightly tapped me from behind. I check to see if someone hit me but it was just the car doing it on it's own. Is this what it would feel like?

The car shakes ever so slightly like a rough idle. And there is an accompanying soft boom from the engine at the exact same time. On my old vw the antenna would shake and that was how I knew the valves and carburetor needed adjusting.
