Keyfob Project for Someone

They keyfob we have to carry with us to use our Fits is bigger and heavier than the typical key. I'm sure that the parts we actually need to open the doors and start the car are small and light. Just removing that key that I know I'll never need saves a lot of weight. How about one of you take it apart and see how small and light you can make it? Then you can pass that information along to us.

If you mess it up, not to worry. You can buy one from Honda for about $300.

Isn't it just the key that makes the fob heavy? I took out the key once when taking delivery of the car and realized the weight is all in the actual key.

It's still big and heavy with the key removed. I bet a locksmith could make a regular key that I could hide on the car. Then I could leave the heavy one home.

Really. When I took the key out I thought the fob was rather featherweight and a good size. Everyone's different, but I much prefer it over the cheap quality fob on my Nissan.

Key is too heavy? Do you even lift?

Well, that depends. On days when I want to lift, I keep removing the keyfob from my pocket and putting it back onto the hook every time I come back from a drive. Do that several times a day, and you get a pretty good workout.

I just checked, and the Fit key weighs 2 oz, while a regular key weighs .7 oz. I popped mine open to see where the battery goes. It's amazing how much technology they can fit into a small space.

I noticed the shiny black side is already getting scuffed. Time for some Zagg Invisishield.

OP, instead of asking someone else to tinker with the fob, maybe you should do this and report back. For me, I am leaving it alone, and not mess with a very expensive item.

I took the key out of mine and just left it on my desk indefinitely. I keep my keys in a little pocket on my arm and the weight of the actual metal key (not the fob) was noticeable and irritating. Now it's just the fob and my house keys on the keyring, much better.

It was clever of them to design in another keyring hook for those who like to remove that heavy key. I thought I'd lose the keyring part of it when I took the key out.

Really nice of the OP to suggest that somebody else undertake a project will benefit him/her but cost that other person financial harm. There's a name for that type type of blatant sociopathy. The DSM-5 can narrow down the specific axes; however, I'd bet my last $300 OP could give a flying fuck.

What goes around comes around. The only unknown about that is the timeline of such payback.

I have done a lot of tinkering and posted how-to and pictures. This is beyond my skill level, but I thought someone else might give it a try. I removed the key and popped the fob apart, but I didn't want to go any farther.

I'm sorry if I offended anyone by offering a suggestion.

Are you talking about the EX or LX key fobs? I am waiting for my 2015 LX so do not have a key fob to compare. Thanks, Bill

You know you'll never need it until your battery dies unexpectedly and you can't get into your car because you've gotten rid of the backup key.

I don't think I'll get rid of that key. From what Honda people have told me, you have ample warning before the battery goes dead.
