Thanks so much for this link!
COTY = Car Of The Year if you were asking what it stood for… wait… you were the one who posted that, so you're looking for agreement… and I agree. COTY for sure.

Keep in mind that COTY honors have been given to the Corvair, Vega, Toronado, (Chevy) Monza, Citation, (Plymouth) Reliant, (Renault/AMC) Alliance, PT Cruiser, etc. The emphasis is more on "interesting and unusual", not on quality.
One phrase that I do agree with is:
I also take issue with CVTs that pretend to be geared transmissions, to the detriment of overall performance. It's a great example of what Henry Petroski calls a "survival form", a characteristic of the system designed to make new technology more palatable to users of older technology. There's no viable reason to give a CVT stepped or fixed ratios, but they are designed in to satisfy people who are used to geared transmissions or who want to feel as though they have more control over power transmission.
One phrase that I do agree with is:
We almost universally approve of Honda's strategy of letting the CVT select a ratio near the power peak and vary to keep the engine there when the driver's foot is flat on the floor, rather than dithering through pretend gears as so many others do today.

I wondered why, after learning to drive with three on the tree and decades of manuals, why I took so readily to the Fit's CVT operation. Then it hit me--it's very much like a boat, where I advance the throttle to a desired engine rpm, and as propellor slippage decreases, boat speed increases (and vice versa) until it catches up.
I can bring the engine up to 2,000 rpm and the Fit will accelerate to and maintain 60 mph. Lower speeds can be achieved with even lower rpms. Of course, to accelerate faster, I can use more rpm and back off once desired speed is achieved, and it's hard not to do that. I am seriously loving this CVT Fit.

Not to mention that giant last-gen Caprice.

I loved my Alliance. I mean, it was no Javelin, but it was a good car.
