L.A. Times Fit Review 5 April

Here's the link, stolen from a post on the TOV forum:
http://www.latimes.com/classified/au...autos-highway1
It's the first US online newspaper article I think-- many more will follow later this month.

Safety Issue

This part of the review gives me pause:
"The car does not have Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) crash structures that help mitigate front-end crashes with larger vehicles (ACE will be incorporated into the next Fit/Jazz redesign)."

I can't see myself battling 16 wheelers or SUVs in this tiny car.

Not to worry. This is a picture taken of the JDM Fit being crashed tested against a much heavier Acura Legend at Honda's current safety test facility in an offset frontal test:

Note how well the Fit's passenger cell stays together with this rather severe crash.

Interesting. I'll wait to see how well the Fit survives the IIHS tests. I don't really need a car now, as my VW is only 11 years old.

EURO NCAP Crash Test Results:
http://www.euroncap.com/content/safe...?id1=1&id2=188

Please note that for this test, the Fit/Jazz did not have side or side curtain airbags. Also, that car was equipped with the 1.4L engine, and the front bumper is slightly different than the US version.

The Legend is heavier, but the frame/bumper is still around the same height as the Fit/Jazz. If the vehicle were the same weight, but higher; like say a smaller SUV or truck, then perhaps the crash results wouldnt be as good.

Thats where ACE would help. It is designed for more compatability between two vehicles that collide that are different in weight and height.

If it is not under the front seat it is under the rear. Besides if the gas tank explodes, it really does not matter where in the car you are.

Having said that gas tanks very-very rarely explode - except in the movies where it happens all the time.

Everywhere I've seen states that the fuel tank was moved to between the front seats, in the middle. If it was at the back, you would see a lump underneath the back seat. Instead, the middle back seat actually has a decent amount of leg room without the traditional lump. I don't think it is anywhere worse than other cars, the fuel tank has to be located somewhere in the car

Interesting, in Canada, we have 18 wheelers.

Not many cars have a structure capable of combating an 18 wheeler or big vehicle. Even with the ACE structure, an 18 wheeler could drive over a small car.

But this little car will be safer than just about any mid size car produced in the 1990s. The type of car typical working people can afford.

Especially safer for people with 10+ year old cars.

I can't believe nobody thought about bumper compatability until half the cars on the road were tall enough to sheet the roofs off of the other half. I had a minor collision in the ice a few years back and crashed my Corolla into a pickup - cost $1000 in body work for what would have been no damage at all if i'd my bumper had taken the hit instead of my headlights. The only consolation is how often those heaps roll over - not often enough though IMO.

Or on NBC dateline - remember the exploding Chevy truck gas tank fake demo they did with the toy model rocket motor rigged to ignite the post side impact leaking gas tank filler necks
