A weight increase of 3% would decrease acceleration by the same amount. I doubt that a driver would notice it at all.

I did a similar thing by adding 12 gallons of capacity to my Datsun 510 which weighted just a bit over 2000 pounds. I couldn't tell the difference between full and empty for both tanks and the Datsun certainly didn't have a V-8 to haul it around.
Sure could with that Caddy! All he did was complain afterwards, and after awhile, had it removed. You are right, it shouldn't have mattered that much, but sure did. GM engineering was, and is, less than competent.

Question Finding the limit

Not wanting to start a fight but, has anyone actually run OUT of gas in their GK yet? If so, how much gas did it take to fill it back up? It seems that knowledge would end a lot of this conjecture. My daily commute is 33 miles each way with a 16 mile stretch of state park land in the middle i.e. no gas, no residences, and spotty cell service so it's not an experiment I'm willing to undertake. It would be helpful then to know that if when I leave work at 1am and that little amber light comes on, that I've got a gallon of USEABLE fuel left in the tank to get me home.
Useful information appreciated, snarky comments ignored.

Someone literally just posted today about their experience pushing the car to run out of fuel over at the sticky fuel mileage discussion post: https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/3rd-generation-2015/82938-fuel-mileage-related-discussions-31.html#post1306168

You can definitely go past the zero range by a good amount and not be at risk of completely running out of fuel.

Good info

Thanks Nicbeau. Surprising numbers in that post. I've taken mine a dozen or so miles past '0' range, but ran out of courage at that point (I got tired of pushing empty cars in my 20's) Good to read that 400 on the odo isn't out of the question.

Distance remaining is a feel good number that's dangerous to listen to. "This is how much gas you have left" is much better information than "You can go this much farther" because mileage varies- the computer doesn't know if you're on the uphill or downhill leg of your trip, if you're trying to get out of town right before a holiday weekend, if you've got your foot in it because you're running late...

[QUOTE=MyFreakFit;1298848]Several people have posted about filling up when the fuel gauge was down to 1 bar and range listed was very low. They typically reported only being able to put in 8 - 8.5 gallons of fuel.

With the tank rated at 10.6 gallons, that's leaving something like 20 - 60 more miles in the tank (depending on avg. mpg) when fuel gauge says you're running low.

Today I found myself down to 1 bar on the gauge with the range listed at just 5 miles left. I was within a few miles of my house and a gas station. So I decided to risk it and see what would happen if I tried to push it past the range listed.

It went down to zero and then the last bar on the gauge disappeared. I had no bars on the fuel gauge at all. I drove around for another 5 miles expecting to run out of fuel at any moment, but didn't. Went to the gas station and filled up with exactly 10 gallons.

I wish we could get the gauge reprogrammed to be more accurate of what is actually in the tank.[/QUOTE

You must like spending money on fuel pumps. The gas is a coolant. Below 1/4 tank, you risk overheating it

I've gone past the bars at least 15-20 miles. There is a typically a reserve and I have never been afraid to run any Honda of mine past the last bar. Especially if I am on the highway. With that said, I have been using Feully to track my fill ups:

5 16/05/2015 279.00 8.325 33.51 3.259 50%
4 12/05/2015 339.00 9.760 34.73 3.099 65%
3 09/05/2015 304.00 9.148 33.23 2.959 50%
2 06/05/2015 356.00 9.213 38.64 3.099 70%
1 02/05/2015 9.727 3.199 70%

I drive for Lyft and Uber, so I do a lot of city driving in Seattle.

I calculate my MPG at every fill and right now I am at 38mpg average mixed driving. Therefore with a 10.6 gallon tank I should be able to get, on average, just over 400 miles on a tank before it sputters and dies.

Now I am not going to try that but yesterday I went about 360 miles in the tank and filled up with 9.118 gallons. It had been telling me to get gas for two days but I new I had some room.

I don’t mind that the light comes on etc. It keeps me on my toes.

Don't play around in the bottom of the tank using only the stock fuel gauge. It's a bad idea.

I just filled up this morning and on this tank I drove 94 miles after the low fuel light came on. I'm not sure when my dash gauge range went to zero but it said I had 46 miles left when the low fuel light came on, so I'm assuming I drove approx 40 miles after it said zero.

Why did you do that?

Why? Because idiot lights are for idiots.

If you have a decent gauge and know how much gas you actually have, why would you drop everything and run to the gas station in a panic just because an idiot light came on? My UltraGauge is set to a 10.1 gallon tank, giving me a half gallon reserve within the reported 10.6 gallon tank my 13 has.

I've got a lot of miles left when that light comes on, and I wait. Why add extra errands?

I have my SG set to 11 gallons and I actually added 11.347 gal on my last fill, leaving me approx 1 gallon in the tank (thank you sws for solving the mystery of the tank's actual capacity). I drove 622 miles on that tank and am grateful I don't have to pay a visit to the gas station more often. After some more experimenting, and once I'm more comfortable with the actual tank capacity, I will set the SG to 12 gallons. That will give me a more accurate distance to empty reading. As Charlie and several other members have eluded, the Fit's dash gauges are only very conservative estimates, I'm a numbers guy and I need more accurate info. I rely on my SG and don't pay particular attention to the oem gauge estimates.

Charlie, I'm jealous that you can set your UG tank capacity to the tenth of a gallon (e.g. 10.1 gal). The SG only allows you to set it in full gallon increments (e.g. 10, 11, 12, etc).
