Electronic Key Ripoff

Why is it that a replacement key for our Fits cost more than a TV?

30 39 : 19 20 : TVs : Target

So how much did a key and reprogram cost? Any way to reprogram yourself or is that a required dealer visit?

From what I've heard, the cost around $350, and the dealer does the programming.

I had a new key and reprogram made early this year for about $110. Looks and works identically to the original two keys.

One pushbutton start style fob and one blank uncut key for a 2015 EX looks like about USD $75 MSRP, plus programming.
Actual prices can vary widely, dealers are free to set their own parts markup structure and labor rates as they see fit.
Shop around.

what kind of key do you want? if you want a key to just open the door, you can buy a flat stock key for $10 cut to the door tumbler.

C. Harper Honda, Belle Vernon PA. Stopped in one day to order the key and to schedule the service appointment (since they need the car itself). Next day the key was in, so they pulled the car in and programmed the new key. Took almost an hour, but no drama.

I bought Fits at two different dealers, and they both said, "About $350." I'll call the local guy and see what he says.

Only if local guy has a dealer level scantool with access to the necessary area, or maybe a locksmith specialty scanner.

And a router to duplicate the sidewinder key cut.

In my town, it's dealer only.

That's what I meant - the local dealer. I bought one Fit an hour away and another about five hours away. The local dealer had nothing, and nothing arriving. I had been waiting for months and finally gave up on him.

I'm sorry; didn't realize that you were talking about an EX (my wife has an LX). When I read "key", I assumed the sort of key (with integral remote) that the LX has. No idea what the EX fob costs.

I think the EX and LX have the same fob/key combination. Touch the door handle for a second, and the door unlocks. Push the red button to start the car. there is a "just in case" key inside the fob.

Sorry. I got my letters mixed up. I was thinking of the EX-L.
