The new cumulative stats screen on Gastracker prompted me to do some back-of-the-envelope calculations. I switched commuter duty from my '04 Mercedes ML500 SUV to the Fit at the end of March. 6328.5 miles later, I've spent $456.07 on 185 gallons of gas for the little Honda.

That gave me an average price per gallon of $2.47. The Mercedes requires premium, so call it a 40-cent swing for $2.87 a gallon to feed it. I have full paper records, but I'm lazy and just estimated a 16.5 mpg average. That's probably optimistic.

Theoretical gas cost for the Benz works out to $1099.21. The Fit has 'saved' me $643.14, or two and change of its loan payments. Factor in maintenance costs and I might be ahead. (Care and feeding of a ten-plus year old Mercedes can hurt.)

If I didn't wail on the poor little Fit so hard (my Fuelly lifetime avg is only 34.1), those numbers would look even better.

 

Yes, this is definitely an economical little car.

And just think how much cheaper it'd be if you got your MPG up in the mid-40s, which seems easily done on this car.

 

Well, mine's not paying for itself, based on comparison with my last car. But then, my last car was also a Fit, so....

 

I am averaging more than 10 MPG over my previous car. My reimbursed mileage now covers my work related fuel and my commute/personal use fuel. Not exactly paying for itself, but a nice step in the right direction.

 

My fit is getting more than double what my 4 runner was getting. Personal best mileage is 44.8mpg versus around 17.

 

I'm getting about 30mpg more than I did with my Sienna, so the savings just keep piling up.

 

I just filled up after 3 weeks of driving when the gauge was at 3 bars. $16. That's about half what I was paying with my Lexus RX450h, and that was a pretty good vehicle on fuel. This FIT seems to do better than my '10 did when new.

 

I had a 2006 SRT 10 quad cab for 3 years that was EPA rated 9 city and 12 highway...I had to use 93 octane in it too.500 plus hp 10 cylinders Viper powered was a blast to drive but expensive. I like my Fit so much better for everyday use and it will haul all the gear we need. I did love the SRT tho. .
