After doing the family clothes washing last week, I noticed something, along with the random leftover sock, sitting at the bottom of the washing machine. My heart just sunk when I realized it was the key fob to the Fit, which had probably been left in a pants pocket. It'd gone through the entire wash cycle (warm wash for the record) and was probably toast with all of the circuitry inside it.
Surprisingly, it still works! The red light on the fob still lights up when any of the buttons are pushed, and it still locks and unlocks the car remotely. Amazing!!!!
The fobs on my old Fords weren't nearly resilient after much less abuse. Kudos to Honda for building a tough remote!
EX or LX? The first week with my EX I rescued the fob from a pair of jeans moments before washing. I've washed a VW key twice (one time through the dryer too) and a Toyota key once with no trouble after I took them apart and/or buried them under a cupful of rice for a week or so. For some reason I don't think the EX fob would fare as well.
It's an LX. Is there a difference between the LX and EX keys?
The EX has "keyless entry", so there's no "key" per se, just a fob. Well, that's not quite true, there's an "emergency key" to unlock the driver's door hidden INSIDE the fob, but, yeah, they're completely different.

You might want to bury in rice for a couple of days, in order to dry out any residual water, just as a precaution. It's probably wet in there. Good to know though.
Something happend to me but with my last place keys. I lived in vancouver and the entrance was with a remote controler. I went to the hut tub with some girls and did not realize that my keys where in my shorts. Then I could not get out of there. I left it rest for couple days and they worked flawlessly.

Forget the keys, the rest of this story is much more interesting!

Kudo's to the lowest bid vendor/supplier who manufactured that remote for Honda.
It was amazing when I worked in an automobile production plant to see parts manufactured in the darkest recesses of this planet, from Turkey to France to China to India, etc., etc, etc. The 2009 Saturn Sky was the last vehicle I worked on a production line building. I identified components produced in over 240 countries. Realistically, that vehicle was produced with components manufactured in over 600 countries.
One little thing more. .if you do not have a door or hatch completely closed and try to lock up with the fob the chime will not go off and it won't lock.
The information below was part of the service bulletin that
fit freak user chapito posted in his LaneWatch post. I reposted
it here for those of us that have put our key fobs through the wash.
I've accidentally machine washed my EX fob twice. I also went swimming at a neighborhood pool for about 30 minutes and forgot it was in my pocket. Still works fine.
I never put it in rice or did anything to help it dry. It didn't feel any heavier so I figured there was no water in there.
