The factory service manuals for my air-cooled VWs are each about an inch thick.

For my Scion xB, The service manual was on-line, on an enthusiast site. I downloaded it and printed it out. It takes over a foot of shelf space and this is for a car much less complex than a Fit. I think that I've referred to that massive manual a couple of times in the ten years I've had the car. The manual assumes considerable knowledge and access to many special tools that I don't have.

When I actually have had to fix items (belts, brakes, a rear hub bearing, and a door lock actuator) I've found more useful information with a Google search!

I'm not in any huge rush to acquire a Fit service manual. If one comes along I'll nab it, but not having one is not causing me any great distress.

Obviously companies have at least some control over the dealers' mechanics than they would over Shade Tree Sam and his ilk. Good ol' Sam may be good, but lacks the tools and instruments. Make Sam an outlaw? Bad idea because that stifles innovation.

Obviously, the manufacturers are lusting after the day when they can declare an "end of life" for every car and they will put their money behind it.

Car System Voice: "Sorry, your 2022 Lexus is at its end of life, please see your dealer to properly recycle it and buy a new Lexus!"

Owner: "But it ran perfectly!"

Car System Voice: "The federal regulations are there to protect you from obsolete technology!"

In a Bernie Sanders world of socialism. Lusting after? Cynical, are we?

Helms Inc

Helms use to be one of the only authorized printers and sellers for factory service manuals that the dealers themselves use. For older cars you can still purchase physical copies but on newer cars it's a subscription based service only.

For the GK Fit, subscription based.

Really, all I want is to understand more how this car works (some people are actually interested you know!) and to do BASIC maintenance for which they charge more than the real cost... and, importantly, DO IT RIGHT. Nobody cares as much for your car as yourself. Rarely I found a mechanic who would do everything right and tried a little bit more. This dealer for example tried to do as little as possible and not even tell me what they skipped until i noticed. I complained twice and nothing happened. Am I going to go around town wasting my time to get possibly the same crappy service? On my prev car I took the maintenance upon myself and the car has 400,000km on board and still going. Anyway I will do the auto fluid change at the dealer and hope for a shop manual from third party till the next 40,000k go by.

Same here. This is the first vehicle I've ever owned that I can't get a service manual for, and it's very frustrating, to say the least. This is one reason I'm seriously wondering if I should dump the car once the warranty is over.

There is the Japanese CD, which contains almost the same thing from tech.info honda website.

But the Specs and language are all in Japanese.

For me in Latin America is Useless (for engine sections).

I used to own a Nissan Cube, and the entire shop manual CD was posted on the forum. The alternative was to pay the dealer $225.
