Odor of oil in car

I have a 2016 Fit EX CVT with 1800 miles on it.

I've been having a problem with the smell of motor oil in the car when stopped with the engine running. It seems to be getting worse in the past week; previously I only really noticed it if the engine was hot and the car was stopped for more than a minute or two (i.e. longer than a usual red light).

I had the car into the shop last week, and they didn't see any oil leaks. They noticed a few spots of oil on the manifold (caused by my checking the oil with the engine running and oil splashing out of the dipstick hole. The odor was occurring well before I checked the oil). They put the car on a lift and dropped the plastic cover and didn't see anything there, either. They cleaned the engine and told me to come back if the problem persists.

Well, the problem is persisting and before I have to take another day off of work to have this looked at, I just wanted to see if anybody else has experienced this issue or has a recommendation of what to look for.

May or may not be related - after looking at the gas mileage thread, I seem to be getting at the very low end of the reported values at 26-28 mpg, with mostly short trips.

Thanks for any advice!

It doesn't take much oil to make a stink if it hits something hot.

If this is something at started abruptly it is likely a leak, perhaps in the PCV system.

Look on the back side of the engine , if any oil got slopped while topping off it can take forever to burn off on its own.

Once my son put too much oil in his 1991 Honda Civic. The interior of his car smelled like oil for weeks, especially at standing still at traffic lights. I checked the dipstick, drained it to the proper level and the smell went away. Your situation is probably different.

One thing to remember is to always use a funnel on shrouded engines. If you spill a drip it is nearly impossible to wipe up if it goes under the shroud. I just cut an old oil bottle whose threads fit the fill opening. It screws into place so it can't fall out.
