Strange random clicking coming from the rear driver's portion of my Fit

Hi Guys.

I have a 2016 Honda Fit that's only 6 moths old with 3,800 miles on it.

A few weeks ago I started hearing a click noise coming from the rear driver’s side portion of the car. I think its the hatch but I’m not sure.

Its random. But when it does happen (nearly every day) its starts a couple of minutes after I start driving the car at about 10 seconds a part. Then, gradually the time between clicks increases and eventually goes away.

Its not as deep sounding than the door lock 'thunk' when you start driving. More like if you click your fingernails together.

It happens when the car sits over night and after being at work for nine hours.

Anyone hear of this issue before, or have any idea what it could be?

Its going to be tough to get the Honda mechanics to hear it since it’ll probably be gone by the time I get to the dealership. D’oh!

Thanks.

I don't think so, but I'll listen next time I'm driving.

It can happen while I'm driving or sitting in traffic.

Thanks.

I'll take a look and see if anything looks out of place.

If it's related to car speed, check for a stone/pebble stuck in your tire tread, a loose wheel balance weight shifting around, or a loose wheel cover. Any of those can make a clicking sound. The stone in the tire tread in particular sounds a lot like a dog walking across a linoleum floor.

The clicking from Rocks in tread increases the faster you go not decreases. If it's an LX for process of elimination try removing the hub cap. Sometimes the metal ring in them can do weird things and make random clicks.

Sometimes you just gotta have someone ride in the back and move around while you're driving to localize it.

My Fits clicking was driving my wife nuts, it turned out to be the license plate. I put nuts on the bottom of the plate and the clicking stopped....

That's nuts! Good to know. I think many have little rubber pads on the bottom back to eliminate the direct contact on bounce.

It doesn't seem to be a rattle or a pebble in the tire.

It happens in Neutral as well as Drive.

Guess I should try Park next time and listen for the click.

Could be exhaust system, a heat shield or something like that underneath the car which is expanding because of the heat causing your noise. After a while the expansion/movement reaches its maximum and the noise stops. This would be noticeable if the car is started when cold and after a couple of minutes when the engine/exhaust is generating significant heat.

When you hear the noise get out and try listening at the underside rear of the car to see if the noise is louder and more noticeable there.

Thanks Woof. That sounds like a likely cause for the 'click'.

Next time it happens in a safe location I'll get out and poke my head under the car and see what I can hear. And update the thread.

other people have had this problem, it turned out to be the plastic piece with the H badge on the cargo expanding when hot. someone even had it crack. this happens to me too.

edit: i mean the plastic trim on the hatch, that has the h badge on it.
