Car totaled...

Just wanted to share a pic of my 2015 Fit LX that got T-bone about a month ago by some oblivious Uber driver who ran the red light seconds after turning green for me. Also noticed he had a large GPS-like device on his dash that the police pointed out - probably why he didn't see me or got distracted. Hit me right on the driver side, slightly toward the wheel at roughly 30-40 mph, and I was able to walk away (dazed) with bruises to my left shoulder and foot from hitting the pedal, and a slightly sprained neck that's still recovering. It was my first accident but I really should've called the ambulance... Gotta say the side airbag actually felt cushy against my head but I'm only 150 lbs.

Insurance declared it a total loss and gave just over $17k (including $500 deductible I should be getting back) - I bought it new for just over $18k OTD almost 2 years ago in the Bay Area! So I'd give the Fit 2 thumbs up for being pretty safe for a small car and having good "resale" value at least after 2 years, not that I'd hope for it to get totalled of course. Still sucks it happened and I'm super paranoid now when driving...

Haudoodles, that sucks. Glad to hear you are OK and that the car performed well. I grew up just up the street from that intersection. Hopefully the traffic calming project makes Masonic safer.

That was a non-trivial crash. You probably had a minor concussion. I hope you have recovered.

The Fit is a small car but its engineering did its job and protected you. That's great to know.

Keep us posted as to the Fit's replacement.

Great damage control

Glad you were OK Haudoodles; I totaled my 2008 Fit in 2014 when the other driver pulled out of a parking lot without warning. Following the approx. 35 mph collision, my Fit was toast from bumper to firewall, and I was very well protected by driver and side airbags. I'm no engineer, but the designed re-direction of destructive energy away from me was obvious. After 5 years, the insurance payout was very acceptable, and I had no doubts about what to buy next.

I'm glad you are safe after such a terrible-looking incident. Thank you for sharing how the Fit was able to provide adequate protection. I wish you well in coping with the effects from this reckless driver.

Wow! Sorry that happened to you, and don't be shy about getting checked out if you don't feel right.

I ride a Honda motorcycle and intersections are death zones. I make damn certain there are no surprises before I cross an intersection.

Uber drivers are the worst. Constantly breaking the traffic laws indoor to pick up their fare. Distracted by the app.

Uber carries high limit insurance on its drivers.

Be sure you are totally well before signing any releases.

I have to disagree. Cab drivers break laws far more often and consistently than Uber drivers. I've had cab drivers look straight at me while abreast and then just merge into my lane. My choice was to hit the brakes or be pushed into oncoming traffic.

Every Uber driver I've ridden with has been reasonably safe.

I found the cops pointing out the item stuck to the windshield to be amusing. Yes, it is illegal in California, but about every other police car has a GPS or notepad suction-cupped to the windshield! Cops are too good to follow the laws they enforce for everyone else.

man that sucks.

I got into the habit of waiting a about 10 secs after the light turns green. Too many people running the red right after it turns

I am sorry for your loss and thankful that you are OK! Glad to know the safety systems worked and you escaped serious injury.

Almost 20 years ago now, I totaled my new 1996 Civic EX when on the highway and for no reason whatsoever, a car literally came out of the woods right in front of me and I t-boned them with the cruise set at 65 MPH. Never even hit the brakes. I just remember suddenly seeing a car door and a deafening BOOM and then I was stopped in the median.

The whole front of my Civic was completely disintegrated. But I opened the door and stepped out with no problem, and the only injury I had was what looked like rug burns on the inside of my right arm. The other driver was critically injured and I have no idea what his condition ended up, only that he survived.

The kid was drunk and flew out of what turned out to be an access path for an electric company substation.

The car had about 8,000 miles on it.

I'm sorry for your loss. I go to school at USF so I know that it is a pretty busy intersection.
Meanwhile I just joined the Fit family two weeks ago. Got myself an EX CVT. Glad to know that it is a safe little car despite its size.
Are you planning on getting another Fit in the near future?

Wow.
What is scary about that picture is that it looks as if the impact was RIGHT at the drivers location.

Much faster and the airbags would of been challenged to protect.

Nice to know that The Fit can absorb that much impact at that area and still protect the occupant.

The OP probably thinks it was a lousy day, but it was a day where safety equipment and good design left the OP very lucky.
