I think I need to replace my battery and I called the local dealership to confirm that because I have had my car for 50 months and bought it brand new, that if I buy a battery from them I will be credited 50% of the retail cost due to the 100 month limited warranty (pg 33 in the Warranties manual). She told me that there is no 100 month warranty on the original battery.. only on batteries I purchase to replace the original battery. Is this your experience? It doesn't exactly make sense to me..

 

50 months is what 4yrs+? 100 months is 8+ yrs? i’ve never heard of anyone that warrants batteries for 8 yrs. even 4 yrs if the dealer is going to pay half, id take the deal given that the battery is no more than $100.

or shop around to see if anyone else can offer one for even less.

 

 

The warranty on the original battery in my 2018 Fit is 3 years - 2 years full replacement and 1 year pro-rated. Now I'm in Canada so the warranty might be different in the US, but I suspect not. Warranties on the original battery tend to be very short - when I was younger I remember having only a 1 year warranty on a a new VW and then a new Toyota that I bought. Both batteries failed around the two year point and I had to eat full replacement cost on both.

I would suggest getting estimates (price, installation labor, warranty) from places like Wal Mart and Costco and any other local automotive stores and then comparing them to what Honda will charge you. I suspect Honda will be most expensive. Buy where you get the best deal.

 

I don't have the "Warranties" manual in front of me.
But the Owners Manual does state there is a warranty on the battery. It states "provides pro-rated coverage for a replacement battery purchased from a dealer".
(*2016 Honda EX...in my case.)

I would either e-mail or call Honda to clarify. Or show the details of the warranty to the service department.

Provides pro-rated coverage FOR a replacement battery purchased from the dealer, does make it sound like your original factory battery does have a limited warranty, with some type of pro-rated coverage.
The use of the word FOR as opposed to "on" makes it sound to me like the original battery does have some type of limited pro-rated coverage.

50 months is over 4 years, the bumper to bumper is only 3 years of 36,000 miles.

I'm going dig out my warranties manual now, and check exactly what it says about the battery coverage. I concede I don't really know.

If there is much pro-rated value after 4 years I'd be surprised.
From what I've read in these forums, 4 years is a pretty good run with these small Honda Fit batteries.

But from what the Owners Manual states, it does sound like there is suppose to be some type of pro-rated warranty coverage on the original factory battery IF you buy replacement from the dealership.
Whether that value is enough to warrant dealership purchase, as opposed to going anywhere to replace a battery, after 50 months? I don't know.

It sounds like a warranty designed primarily to encourage replacement from a Honda Dealership. The key would be what pro-rated value you would get IF you purchase from a dealership, at whatever cost they charge for the battery and replacement vs. whatever deal you could get from any other outlet.

I'm in the USA, at my dealer we consider the battery as a 3/36 item, even if the original unit was replaced under 3/36 warranty. That means if your bumper to bumper warranty covered the battery replacement, the warranty on that part still expires at the same time as the bumper to bumper warranty expires .

It's the same battery that would be SOLD as a replacement and sometimes people notice the 100 month part of the sticker, which understandably can cause some confusion
The replacement 100 month batterie that a customer purchases are prorated, like others.

 

If I remember right, the battery warranty goes as followed...

Factory battery? 3 years or 36,000 miles, which ever first. The replacement battery covered during that time period will have its warranty expire as of the start of year 3 from the vehicle's original delivery date or after 36k miles is accumulated or exceeded.

Replacement battery? Once you, the customer/buyer, purchases a Honda battery it is then covered under the 100 warranty program. The first 3 years is 100% free replacement under that warranty once the battery is verified as defective and like that of the factory battery, if the free replacement is provided then whatever time you have remaining out of that 100 month duration still continues on. So if a battery fails at month 20 and gets replaced, you should have the remaining 16 months for free replacement and 64 months pro rated to that new replacement battery.
