iOS Cable Cost/Usefulness?
iOS Cable Cost/Usefulness?
I'll be picking up my new 2015 Fit EXL on Tuesday. I don't drive a whole lot right now, primarily 6 miles each way to work, but am considering the cable for integrating my iPhone 5. My first question is of cost and where to purchase the cable. I called the dealer where I bought the car and was quoted a price of $150. Looking online I see that it's $99 plus a small shipping charge directly from Honda

Obviously I'd buy it from the source for a huge savings. But why such a disparity? Could the dealer have misquoted the price?
Secondly, is it worth the hundred bucks for this cable in the first place? I like tech features, and would enjoy the replication of my phone's screen on the radio display if it works that way. Beyond having the ability to download and use a nav app on the radio screen, is there any real benefit to using the Honda Link system with my iPhone 5 and proprietary cable? I'd appreciate any information on this.
Thanks!

Will that accomplish the same thing? The Honda Cable seems to be redundant. Where's a good place to buy Lightning to HDMI?
No, I believe the lighting to Hdmi cable will only display your phone on the screen when the car is in park. The Honda cable should allow you to use your phones GPS on the screen while in drive. I have not tried this myself though.
Only you can answer that. I decided not to purchase (except for the Lightning to USB) at this point for a couple of reasons. (1) I'm cheap and I don't want to upgrade my data plan just to use navigation. (2) My iphone 5 runs hot with using navigation and sometimes turns itself off to avoid overheating. It has turned itself off at a critical point in one instance where I really needed help. So now I just pull over to the side of the road and check out where I need to go. I use my iPhone 5 for music only via Bluetooth. The cable I bought is for power.
You can buy the 3 items separately if you want. I went to the Apple store and one of the blue-shirted folks there said the Lightning Digital AV adapter is proprietary and it is the only part you must by from them. The Apple Lightning to USB cable can be bought from other vendors BUT after searching reviews I found that the "knockoffs" don't last as long so I decided to buy from Apple. The third cable, HDMI to HDMI, according to the Apple employee can be bought for a dime on the dollar from anywhere. So you can save a few bucks with some legwork and this link (if you are a Prime member) - Amazon.com: Lightning Digital AV Adapter: MP3 Players & Accessories

Thanks for the link to the digital adapter. I have a Best Buy Reward Certificate for $35 that expires on 9/12. I can buy the lightning to HDMI adaptor at $45 there. Then I'll just need an HDMI to HDMI cable, a lightning to USB that I already have, and I should be set. I figure this will be cheaper than the $99 plus $3.95 for shipping from Honda and should do the exact same thing. Bonus, if it doesn't work well for me I can return the stuff to BB. Win win.

I went ahead and bought 2 items at Best Buy. I also had a $50 gift card laying around. The Lightning to HDMI Adaptor was $50 and the HDMI cable 4' store brand was $10. I'll use my existing Lightning to USB cable from my previous vehicle. I'm not sure if I'll buy the Nav app, but would like to try the Honda Link including iHeart, Aha, and location based services. Now to wait for my car to be ready for delivery.
You are correct but I don't need to mirror my iphone onto the screen. I just use bluetooth. The less I look at the screen, the less I am distracted and can keep my mind on driving. My wife appreciates that.
