I like to keep track of what tires will go where at the beginning and end of winter. For years, I have been attaching labels like this to the wheels so I know what car and what position they will go to. Color coordinated and laminated.
I just use a paint pen and write on the inside of the wheel or a tire marker and write on the tread of the tire
Same here, white paint used to mark the inside of the wheel. I went around the car marking "I", "II", "III" and "IIII" on the wheels, clockwise starting from the drivers wheel. This simplifies the process of switching back and forth between winter and summer tires to make sure the tires go back in the right location.

I "rotate" mine front to rear, so a permanent mark wouldn't work for me. Many snow tires are directional, so you can't move them from right to left. It looks like I'll be needing my snow tires - starting today.

My snow tires are directional but my summer tires aren’t, so I have two rotation patterns I use. As I said, I just mark the tires where they were so I know where they go next time.
Pictured are my EX wheels, an ordinary black Sharpie works fine on them. For my black winter tire rims, I had to buy a white oil based Sharpie at Hobby Lobby.
