Anyone installed the original Honda spoiler on a GE6?
It did not come with the bolts so does anyone know the length of bolts I should be using?
As for the installation, It looks pretty straightforward, line it up where it should go, mark and drill the holes and bolt it on...? Anything I need to be aware of or any advice on how to go about this?
As for sealing up the holes against water coming in, would rubber washers or so kind of sealant be better?
Depends on whether you already have a threaded hole on your tailgate, if not you could drill a hole and instead a rivet threaded insert, some rubber washer and some sealer for good measure.
Thanks for all the advice everyone, I think we've finally formulated a plan on how to do this, and I've learned a couple of very useful things trying to work out how to install this spoiler-
First thing is I didn't know how easy it is to install rivets, thanks to PeaBrainer for the suggestion. That really seems the way to go.
I also didn't know you could just pop out the rubber plugs on the upper inside of the hatch and see/feel what is up there in terms of wiring and tubing.
Turns out the left side of the hatch has a tube that goes off to the left and down the side of the hatch, so that side is clear to drill through in terms of not hitting wires or anything.
The right side has a bundle of wires that goes toward the middle of the hatch, and they will be under the drill point, but you've got maybe an inch or so of clearance from the top of the hatch where you drill until you would hit the wires. So here is the plan-
We're going to try and stuff a towel into the right side of the hatch through the hole where the rubber plug is, over the wires and under the drill point, so when the drill goes through it hits the towel and protects the wires. The left side is clear. Find the correct alignment for the spoiler and mark where the holes are (see below). For the rivets, depending on the size of the head, we may or may not use a washer under the rivet to make it wide enough, then a rubber washer under that, then the spoiler, then a rubber washer between the spoiler and hatch, then the hatch.
I've got some Lexel weather sealant to put all around but rubber washers and over the rivet head. I've also got some 2mm thick double sided waterproof Koala tape to put under the spoiler to add some extra adhesion and prevent any potential rattle between the spoiler and hatch.
And I think that should do it.
One thing about lining up the spoiler on the hatch, I went out there to have a look today and placed it in the correct position, then the guy I was with asked what happens when you open the hatch, and sure enough the spoiler totally blocked it from opening. Sounds obvious now but yeah, duh, make sure you place it where it doesn't block it opening. In fact, if you open the hatch and then place the spoiler, it only fits in one spot and it fits super snug right where it should be. So align it with the hatch open.
We'll be installing it around to first week of April, will update then how it went.
