Power Steering Warning Light Came and the car On

Had a strange situation occur today with my 2012 Fit base model. I returned from running errands this morning with no issues. A short time later I started the car and it wouldn’t move. I noticed the yellow steering wheel warning light was on and the steering seemed to be in the locked position even though the engine was running. I turned the engine off and restarted it and the light went out and would move normally. I restarted it a half dozen times and got no light and the car drove normally. Has anyone else had this problem and, if so, how was it corrected? Thanks in advance.

No replies to my query? I can’t believe no other Fit is experiencing this problem. I’ll try once more.

Happened to me on my S2000. Would loose power steering when the light is on. Would come back to normal after a restart. But got worst as tome gone by. Finally replaced the power steering controller module and all went back to normal.

Never happened on the Fit.

Thanks for your reply. About how much did the repair cost you and we’re you able to do it yourself or did you have to go to a dealer?

Bought the module on ebay for 150 $. Was like 1500 $ from dealer...

Did the repair myself. Consisted on swapping the module, then made the module "relearn" following a procedure in the shop manual.

How did you determine it was the module rather than the motor or something else?

With the EPS code that was stored in the car, and with the help of the internet!

Thank you. I had this happen only once. Afterwards I had someone check for codes and there were none. So I guess I’ll just have to wait and see if it was a fluke or if it gets worse.

That is what I would do.

On my S2000, it started to happen from time to time, and got worst as time gone by. Waited a while before doing something so I could really understand what was going on.

Whats the voltage of your battery? When you see the steering wheel light, do the headlights or radio work?

The battery is only a couple years old. It is an interstate battery. We have driven this since the first and only occurrence almost always with the radio on and occasionally also with the headlights on and had no further issues.

"Couple of years old", doesn't mean your battery is good. I've had batteries die on me after only one year.

Would be worth it to have it tested. And would be good to know if it needs replacing anyway before you get stranded somewhere!

Just went to Interstate where I purchased the battery. They tested it and it checked out great. I wish it would have been the battery though. Anyway thanks for your suggestion.

Electric Steering wheeel randomly locks up

Yes I have, many times. It usually happens (locks up) from a cold start, and randomly, like 2-3 times a week or just a few time s in a month. To get out from a lock-up (restarting doesn't always work), I just either turn ON the Headlights or the AC or combination of both. I saw a Youtube Vlogger /auto mechanic trying to fix a 2017 Nissan Maxima thats having the same problem, it turns out some oil got into the steering connector(s) giving that random issue.

Thanks for your response. Only has happened once to me. Fingers crossed it was just a glitch.
