Question Replacing Honda Fit foglight (not the bulb!)

I have a 2007 Fit Sport. The right foglight lens was shattered, probably by a flying rock. I bought a new body-color fixture online (a big saving over the dealer price) and it's fine. My problem is I can't detach the bulb assembly from the back of the old, broken foglight. It looks like it's supposed to twist so that the flanges on the assembly line up with holes on the unit and that it would just pull apart. But it twists only a fraction of an inch, not enough to line up the flanges with the holes. Is there some trick to this? I've tried pushing it in, pulling it out, and neither works. I don't want to break it. Should it be accessed from beneath the car? There's limited room to maneuver when you reach in behind the unit from the front.

But I Tried That!

I've tried twisting it and it just doesn't want to move more than a fraction of an inch. So do I need to go from beneath the car, use a tool, find someone stronger than me or what?

isnt there a screw on the foglight cover that you remove to take out the whole assembly?

got the screw...

Yes, I have no problem removing the foglight cover by taking out the screw. The problem is detaching the bulb assembly from the back of the headlight cover. It looks like its supposed to twist so that flanges can pull through holes in the cover, but I can move it only a fraction of an inch--not enough to line up with the holes. I tried pushing it in, pulling it out, but neither worked. I was wondering what i was missing.

If you have never removed this foglight bulb before, IT'S EXTREMELY HARD!! The bulb will only budge a little bit because you have to have the whole assembly out on a table to remove the bulb, it's in there tightly. So... don't try to remove the bulb from the housing, it's easier to disconnect the bulb holder from the vehicle's harness. If u remove the screw to hold the foglight assembly, peer through the bumper cutout and u will see the vehicles harness attached to the foglight assembly. There you will find a harness that you can unclip that leaves the bulb inside the assembly. You have to push the tab in and pull them apart. However, You must use some elbow grease because this is an extremely tough clip to unclip because from the factory, all the parts were brand new and were put together so to take them apart the first time, it's pretty tough.

Hope this helps!

Still can't get it off...

Thanks for the great advice, but I just spent an hour trying to disconnect the coupling at the back of the fog light assembly and IT WON'T BUDGE. I don't want to break either the connector or the bulb. I've also tried twisting it so that I can just remove the housing at the bulb, but I can't get it to move far enough. Arrghhh. Any other advice, tools? Should I try to work on it from beneath the car or just through the (awkward) hole created by removing the fog light?

I would suggest you taking away the wiring from the foglight by going through the wheel liner fender. Like if you had to replace the headlight bulbs. That would be the less awkward position?

So if your working on the right side, you would turn your wheel left, maybe jack the car up if you wanted to, pull the liner out a bit, turn the bulb socket and pull it out. Hope this works also.

If you are about to blow your brains out like when i get frustrated, having no idea on how to take it out, it might be easier to take off the entire front bumper, (pain but in a different way) then put it in your living room couch and work the housing out of it.

You could also remove the bumper and get better access to the wiring and connector behind the light. The bumper isn't hard to remove and might get you a better grip on the connector from behind. This would allow you to move the foglight assembly to a bench.

I've had my base bumper off two times (one for the Honda fog kit install and one to add a mesh behind the grill) so I can get it off/on pretty quickly and confidently. If it's your first time it might take a little longer.

The bulb could have been damaged by whatever shattered the lens, and it may be jammed in place. Unplug the connector, buy a new bulb, and plug it in.

As for access, if you take one screw out underneath the car you can push the plastic shroud up from underneath and get much better access to the fog light assembly.
