NY Auto Show
NY Auto Show
Went to the NY show for the first time in many years, basically to check out all the B-segment cars...Yaris, Versa and Fit.
The Yaris...way small, not impressive. Yawn. Versa...looks okay from the outside, but they wouldn't let you sit in it.
Fit...impressive. They had two there and I spent a lot of time with them. The Magic Seats are absolutely amazing. The only tricky bit is getting the front and back seats to properly mesh in the "relax" mode, but seriously...I don't think I'd ever use that mode anyway.
Don't like the orange/copper color. I think the car would look a lot better in a dark color.
One of the cars had a tan interior, the other gray. The tan is attractive, but I'd go for gray. Won't show dirt nearly as much.
It feels a lot like my old '89 Civic. Mechanical ventilation controls (simple and they don't break), generally good but very simple/basic fit, finish and materials. Not a lot of geegaws. It's a basic, entry level car...which I like. (I also sat in the new Civic, which feels a whole lot more upscale.)
The engine is very nicely packaged. You can reach both the oil filter (in the front of the engine) and the drain plug (towards the back) without jacking the car up.
The shifter feels nice and positive. No rubbery, vague feeling. Reasonably short throw.
No dead pedal. Bummer, but not a big deal. I can make one.
Pedals spaced close enough to do heel-and-toe, even for my tiny feet. That's a first...I usually wind up making pedal covers to close the gap between the gas and brake.
The body kit on the Sport doesn't look bad in person at all. I generally don't like cr*p like that, but I didn't even notice it.
The only thing I could wish for...it would be great if the car was maybe four or five inches longer.
Overall, I'd buy one. It's not nearly as cool, personality-wise, as a Mini (which I just love) but it's one heck of a lot more practical.

I have specific needs...I'm a musician, and all of the band's equipment has to fit inside my car. I also ride recumbent bikes...ditto. I carry one of these inside my car:

I currently drive a Ford Focus wagon, and it's got all the room I need. The Fit would work...but it's just a wee bit tight. The magic seats increase the usable space considerably...from time to time I have to unbolt the rear seat cushion from my Focus because it gets in the way.

Also sat in the Fit, "bigger" inside than I thought it was going to be. Being just an inch under 6ft, I had enough leg room, and I don't think the seat was all the way back. Reminded me of the brother '94 Civic on the inside and "feel" to it. The back seat, the door was a little on the small side I believe, but I could manage. Looks like it will be a great entry level car. Also looked at the Yaris, OK Versa, OK and the Caliber (little larger than Fit), IMO may be a little heavier than the Fit, but both won me over this year at the show. Caliber is smaller and better looking (I test drove 7 of them) in person. Fit is a winner for the B Segment and would not mind driving either of them!

LOL
I was wondering when someone was going to comment on that. I did not notice that sitting in the car at the show, but I noticed it when I posted the pics though!! The car was not running, some sort of demo gauges I guess with the tach about 2K and the fuel level where it is
