I don't think 1000 miles is nearly enough to change the oil. Even the factory manual says there are special additives in the original oil. I'm waiting until like 5000 miles before my first oil change, then let the dealer do my first change and then after that, I'll run synthetic. It will probably be at 10,000 miles before I do that according to my plans.

help?

since no one responded when the post was moved to the maintenance page, I figured it's time to try it here again.

Can someone confirm that this is the oem filter for the Fit:
15400-PLM-A02

Also, where is the cheapest place i cand find some? I saw one website that charges $39 for 6 including shipping and tax. Does anyone have a cheaper site?

This is my opinion only and is not the expressed opinion of Honda or Fitfreak.net

I have raced motorcyles and cars and have almost always changed my oil at 5k regardless of what the dealership says. using mobile 1 or amsoil. Just for the skeptics - i used the extended drain 25k or 1 year oil from amsoil in my element and sent in a sample of oil taken from middle of the drain and sent it to 2 different places for analysis. both came back as "good with still having oil life". So, i would say amsoil is the way to go, but it still kills me to leave it in that long

Oil Change Void Warranty?

Does it void the warranty if you a) change the oil yourself and b) use an oil that isn't Honda brand or same viscosity rating (i.e. synth oils) ?

Keep receipts of your oil/filter purchases, use the same weight oil and it would be fine.
Synthetic is better but more expensive, however; i've always used mobil1 after the initial breaking-in with dyno oil.

I would use the correct API as you stated AND the correct wieght. Engineers are funny about building things to tolerences and then finding out later recommended lubricants were not used,,,,

True, it's the viscosity that matters (as well as the API specs). US Fits call for 5W-20.

so why bother recomending a weight at all? We could just put strait 50w if it meets the api right? Are we talking what will void the warranty or whats best for the engine?

From the owners manual, "Oil is a major contributor to your engine's performance and longivity. Always use a premium-grade 5W-20 detergent oil displaying The API certification seal."

And from the 2007 Warranties Manual, "The warranties in this booklet do not cover: The failure of a part or accesory due to: - A low fluid level or the use of a fluid other than specified by Honda"

Pretty straight forward and simple, don't you think?

So, "always use", doesn't really mean "always use". Makes sense to me.

I always listen to the voices INSIDE my head.... and I HATE it when they argue.

+++++++++++++++

Seriously, I know the comment about 50 weight oil was an exaggeration.

Honda says to use Energy Conserving oil, and I've never seen one so designated that was heavier than 30 weight. (In other words, 10W-30 is Energy Conserving, 10W-40 is not.)

Besides, for the US market Fits, the VTEC solenoid in older cars has been known to malfunction if an oil over 30W is used...am I correct?

I'm sticking to a 20 or 30 weight oil myself!

hey guys im been lurking on the forum for a while and this will be my first post. i read this whole thread and one of the earlier pages says that honda filters are basically the same as fram filters. i havent done my first oil change yet but should i take it to honda (since they gave me free oil changes) or should i do it myself and use a different filter? will there be much harm if i use the oem fit filter?

thanks

Deeezfit:

The engineers at Honda know more about what works in their products than a bunch of forum users is likely to know. These are all just opinions, and I'm sure there are some filters that are better than the OEM one, but that doesn't mean there's something substandard about the OEM filter. It's not some conspiracy to wear engines out and sell you another one in 5 years, and the most expensive filter in the world is not a magic talisman that will protect an engine from wear if the oil isn't changed. It's a damn oil filter.

Listen to Grouser on this one.
If you have free oil changes, you would be foolish to change the oil yourself, IMO. Costs nothing, you don't get dirty, your warranty is unquestionably maintained, you don't have to dispose of the used oil, fewer receipts and other BS to keep up with.

Common sense all around.

Best to you,
Joe

First oil change... free..

So, I'm due for my first oil change and tire rotation , Maintenance minder A 1.

I can get a free oil change done at my dealership. Do you guys think I should leave my car there? I can't seem to find a good time to stay there and wait.

I was also thinking of just getting it done some where else for like $20. then do the tire rotation on my own.

What do u guys think?
