Exclamation Another Crazy Idea (Fan Oil Cooler)

It seems that I am thinking of strange things to do in my car. I have just bought oil cooler for my car. I was thinking of installing small fan on the cooler, to give it more air flow to it, like when I am in traffic light. I have some questions, as the fan will be install infront of the cooler, wouldn't the normal air flow will be stronger than the fan, what if I don't turn it on, will the air make the fan spin, so it will give more air.

The fan would help while sitting still but once you start moving at hwy. speeds it would just slow the air down depending on how and where you installed it.

Have you considered these Oil Cooler - Cool Collar From Innovations LLC - The World's First Affordable Oil Cooler --? I got one and it was too big so I cut it in half length ways and cut a few of the fins off so it would close snug around the filter with a hose clamp and it seems to work fine.

I'm sure it helps cool the oil but how much is still unknown since I don't have an oil temp guage. I only use it during the hot months and take it off for the Winter.

I used the other half on the riding lawn mower.

Also you don't want to cool your oil too much otherwise it won't be able to burn off the contaminants.

I have the same thing in my car, but mine wasn't big but wide, so i had to make it narrow. I don't know if it really works. I have oil temp gauge that I will install with the oil cooler. I will install it later after the oil cooler and see if there is any diffrence in temp. I think it should work because it has the same idea of CPU heatsink.

Exactly. I had to make it both more narrow and shorter since it was made for a bigger filter and had the set screws to tighten it but I cut off that part to make it fit right.

It can only help in hot Summer driving. I'd be interested in seeing how the oil temps. do with a guage installed.

Today I installed mine, but had to cut it again because of my oil sandiwsh plate the filter is more in the front, so I could't install it, as there is so narrow space, so I cut it, anyway checked my oil temp with it, found out it helps little, usually I get 100c in my temp but the filter cooler I got 98c, and later my temp went up to 105c. I think it helps because it has the same idea of computer heatsink. Maybe if there is more air flow to the filter it will help.
Just keep it on, it will not make any harm.

I plan on leaving it on at least during the Summer. When the temps start dropping to around 40 F I'll take it back off for the Winter.

Most of my driving is at 70 MPH so I'm sure it's getting some decent air flow.
