Raimondas, thanks for the excellent write up. I have had mine installed for about 2 wks now. It did make shifts a little shorter but not as much as some previous short shift kits I have installed in other cars. This is due to the fact that the stock shifter is already quite good. If I had known about the Skunk 2 kit before installing this I would have purchased that instead. The shifting experience is improved with the Mugen kit but not $200 worth. My advice if you don't want to leave it stock it buy the Skunk 2 kit. Just my 2 cents worth.

 

thanks for lookin out man. I've decided on the skunk2 kit, just looking for best possible price.. So far eBay looks to be it.

 

after doing some math.. if I am doing this write using the numbers given by the author of this thread.. stock: 3.75" vs 3" from 3rd-4th is about a 20% decrease. Skunk2 claims 22% so I think these are very comparable.. if this is a good way to measure.

 

Just installed this. LOVE IT. It added a little notchy feel, I like it better than the smooth shifts it had before. Make the car FEEL like its there. The shifts dont seem shorter to me? Im sure they are. I thought OEM felt short to me anyway.

BTW, the Skunk2 adapters seem cheap to me.
So glade this was a whole unit. Well worth the money. Now awaiting my million dollar shift knob. Hehehe

 

cool, but skunk2 still uses the OEM components which is a good thing =) cheap yes, can't go wrong when I bought my kit for $32..$40 shipped vs $200+

 

I think the Skunk2 shifter will run into problems later on. You have to take apart the OEM shifter mechanism. It'll never go back like OEM. Only time will tell.

BTW, I got my Mugen shifter for my Bday. Cant beat free.

 

your wrong, just installed mine, and if you plan to take it off in the future it will go back just fine, it doesnt mess with anything

yea but doesnt really hit the pviot ball. only on the top which does not matter in the oem shift linkage

 

So, since it does have allen screws holding on the adapters, you honesty dont think added time/shifting on the adapter will cause it to loosen up? You dont have to shift hard either. Im sure we all have had those cheap allen screw shiftknobs. They all fall off, no matter how you drive.

The shifter is one of the most touched and handle piece of our 5speed cars.
Thats why I said time will tell. Id just hate to be one of you when that adapter falls off or gets loose.

 

adapter might fall off in time? yes there is a chance but as for screwing up the stock assembly theres no chance

naw I think they resolved it. Like they said only time will tell, but that's probably the case with most any mods.. you're changing out stock to aftermarket, there will always be issues.

This thread should stay alive for people wanting to voice their input on the DIY of this shifter or ask questions.

But back on topic, no I dont think the Mugen shifter is worth $200. Its just the name. Im glad it was the whole mechanism though. I'll take pics once my sexy shiftknob arrives.

haha I didn't realize til you pointed that out. Yeah I put on a bunch of blue loctite on the set allen screws. The adapter felt really snug as I tried to yank it off with my hands after screwing with allen and letting the loctite set. Good stuff

 

I have a quick question, Im new but did try to search for the answer with no results. Will the OEM shift knob fit on the Mugen SS kit? If not which knobs will fit? Thanks in advance.

 

Yes, the OEM shift knob fits.
