Need Ideas for in-car Bike Racks / 2008 Sport

Hi, and thanks for looking!

My wife and I are getting back into bicycles, and I need ideas for in-car bike racks. I've read about the hitch style (don't care for the width issues), and the roof-rack option (too tall for my wife ... she's a whopping 5'4"!), so I'm going with interior storage. More secure in my mind.

Anywho, I've seen threads where folks have fabricated wheel chocks front and rear, and of course there is the "toss 'em in there" method, but I'm asking for more options.

If you can post a pic or two, that would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Cheers!
Bill

No, no kids at home ... we have one child, and now he's 24 and out the door!

The "toss 'em in there" method won't work for us; two bikes will tangle badly, and be difficult to extricate once we get to our destination. I'm really looking for some way to secure them (two bikes) upright in the car, without them becoming missles in the event of a crash, or have them become molecularly bonded by the end of the trip ...

Thanks for the thought though!

Cheers!

hitch and rack is the best way to store bikes.

All you need to do is buy a couple fork mounts, screw them into a 2x4, then anchor it down in the back of the hatch with some straps and hooks to the cargo hooks in the back. Much cheaper than a hitch rack.

I have a thread on this here: https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/gene...ck-w-pics.html

Secondspassed ... outstanding! Thank you! That is what I was looking for .... I wonder why I didn't see that thread during search? Wrong search values methinks.

OK, where did you find the front hardware? The strap is WallyWorld, the lumber, garage, but where did you source the brackets? Bike shop? Home Depot? Galaxzon 5?

Thanks again, I now have a project for today.

Cheers!

I picked up my fork mounts at a bike shop. I personally would enjoy seeing pictures if you have created one of these yourself!

Well, I tried the "in-car" method, with no luck. My wife's bike is 14", mine 21"; neither would fit in the car in the upright position, even with the seats in "tall" mode.

I opted for a hitch-mount, as my wife can't comfortably and safely reach a roof mount. A short drive around town confirmed that I made a good choice; the real test will come when vacation rolls around ..

I'd be happy to post pics of the finished install, but for some reason (amount of time onboard as a member?), I'm not allowed ....

Anyway, thank you to suke, sol, and seconds for the ideas ... be safe on the roads!
