CVT gearbox oil level check
CVT gearbox oil level check
Hi all,
I'm new on the forum. I have a 2008 Honda Jazz with CVT gearbox. I renew the gearbox oil with Honda CVT-F fluid as recommended but I have a question about level check. There is a COLD and HOT position on the dipstick. When I check the oil with a hot engine (this is what Honda recommends), the level is exactly at the max mark on the HOT side, so it seems perfect. However when I check the level with a cold engine, the level is even higher the the max HOT mark........ The car is parked on a perfectly level ground so I cannot understand what happens and I wonder if I have put too much oil in the tranny. I poured something like 3.2-3.5 liters, what seems to be what Honda mentions for an oil change. But why is the cold level even higher than hot????
Any comment appreciated. Thanks!

While a CVT is a different animal than the conventional automatic for the US market, I think I can explain what is happening. When the engine is shut off and cold, all the oil is in the pan. With it hot, some of the oil is still circulating and stuck to the clutch plates. This is similar to what happens with motorcycle wet clutch.
