Weird sound after installing K&N Intake
Weird sound after installing K&N Intake
Good evening guys,
First I want to say thank you for everyone who is going to look at this thread and assist.
So I just installed a K&N Typhoon Intake in my 2011 Honda Fit (Sport AT with Paddle Shifters). It is working great so far, no engine light and I can feel/hear the difference. Only problem is that I can hear something else from time to time. Let me explain...
(I always drive on "S") So when the car is at a stop, its on first, when I gas sometimes, it makes this weird sound. I can't really explain it but I did find a video on youtube that kinda resembles what it sounds like but instead the hoods not open and i'm not reving.
(Rattling sound when reving at 0:16, 0:18, 0:19 and 0:20)GE8 K&N High Performance Air Intake Kits - YouTube
Its when I am on the road and it makes that sound. It sounds like that but instead I am in the car driving. And it seems to only happen on first gear when I initially start gassing. But it doesn't happen all the time either. I checked all the bolts and screws. Doesn't seem like anything is loose. I tried taking off the filter and checking it for holes or anything and reputting it back on tightly. Nothing is leaking. I replaced lost coolant.
Thank you again for everyones help and I hope you all have a great day.

Resonance?
The noise in the video sounds like a loose washer, or metal shield rattling when the engine rpm/vibration reaches a certain resonance. Try tapping "suspect" areas in your engine bay, like the free end of the clamp that holds down the neck of your K & N air filter. If you hear a similar noise, then that might be the cause. Did you have to loosen the battery tie downs to install the Typhoon? Maybe that was not tightened down securely enough. Good luck!

Response to macbuddy
Hey macbuddy. Thanks for your response. I actually didn't have to do anything with the battery besides removing the negative battery cable as the instructions told me to. I doublechecked the nuts and bolts and don't see anything lose. I tried wiggling around the shield and the intake to see if anything was lose but couldn't find anything. I tried loosening the clamps for the rubber part that connects to the K&N tubing and retightening them and also completely removing the air filter and reconnecting that. Didm't seem like that rely helped... I don't know what else it could possibly be. When I first installed the mounting bracket of where the ground strap was supposed to be I removed the wrong screw/bolt. I removed the giant one that's right next to the ground strap instead. But once I noticed that it was the wrong one I put it back and made sure it was tight. So I'm guessing that sound isn't normal?
Bump
Does no one know? I am still having the issue here and there. I tried retightning everything. I wonder if its raddling from the shield or something. But when I am driving it does sound like its coming from where the intake is.
Hey Joey,
Thanks for your reply. I am guessing the sound is normal then? Its weird because it only happens on 1st gear. I am guessing thats when the car is sucking in the most air. On 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th theres no sound. And it just sounds like something is rattling. But its where the intake should be. I only hear it when I am driving...
Could you by any chance show some pictures of what your talking about? I am kinda confused o.O
Sorry!
And thank you for your help

haven't seen your video yet but did you install the heat shield? I've been stressing this in quite a few occasions that k&n intake kit for the ge has a nasty way of rattling when the shield is installed... intake pipe is hitting your shield.
Thanks for everyones reply. I think I tried retightning everything. And yeah I installed the heat shield. I am guessing its the intake pipe rattling against the heat shield... I am just afraid that it will cause further *more expensive* problems that I would need to fix. If anything, I will try and have my wife record in the car while I am driving and post the video on here so that you guys could hear what I am exactly talking about. But the youtube video that is on there that I posted is similar to what I am hearing when I am driving. Only happens in first gear when I am initially gassing the car, and it doesn't happen every single time. Seems to happen more when I am on a hill or turning and gassing.
Ya know... If you don't have anything to say that is going to help or has anything to do with the problem I am facing why do you even waste your time posting on this thread. Are you trying to gain points or something on the forum? Or are you just plain ignorant? Whatever it is, grow up, if you don't have anything nice to say or that would help, just please stay out of peoples threads. Your wasting space. And if your like that in the regular society, just please stop what your doing, because your a waste of oxygen.
I bet I know what it is. Recently my son had a minor accident..he bumped into someone. So...he is under a rule of no radio. That also resulted in hearing a "noise" under the hood. First thought it was associated with the minor bumper damage...but not. Found it...it was the hood prop rod. Sewed on a velcro strap and its now pulled tight when its stowed....no more noise. The sound was probably there all the time, but with the radio off it was sometimes noticable. Now its gone. And I did also think it was a heat shield. And usually heard going slow..like in first gear. Let me know if that solved the problem...you owe me $5...not

GREAT suggestion!
After years of experience with K&N products, my opinion is that they make good quality products for most cars, but their quality and engineering is a failure concerning intakes for the GD3 and GE8 Fits. I used their version 1 and 2 intakes on my GD3 and found both to be very bad fit and finish. The other intake brands that are available for GD3 and GE8 Fits seem to be much better made with few, if any, complaints.

another suggestion from me is check your hood latch clearance. I'm having a rattle from the front of my car, and after madly hunting for any loose ends inside the engine bay, i found out that its actually the hood itself rattling, cuase the latch have a bit of a clearance. and at particular engine vibration (certain rpm) it will resonate and vibrate the loudest and i can faintly hear it from inside. just check your hood, in the closed position try to push it or pull it. if it moves even a tiny bit, then there's your rattle... if not, then good luck trying other suggestions...
