New Fit! - Change oil at 500mi?
Hi everyone,
I just got a new fit about 500 miles ago - I asked the dealer about break in got no advice, didn't see it in the manual. I changed the oil today at the dealership and then read online that Honda put a special break in oil in there at factory? Is this true?
Did I just ruin my car ???

I've owned quite a few - a few mechanic friends recommended changing oil at 700, in fact popular mechanics even recommended it.
New Car Care How to Take Care of a New Car - Popular Mechanics
I took the manual to the dealer, they acknowledged that break in recommendations are not there in the 2013 manual.
I did some research, apparently Honda includes Moly in their factory oil Top 7 Urban Legends About Motor Oil - Edmunds.com
All in all, I think this might be fine, but was curious if there were any hard core Honda techs here that could share their advice. I don't want to get in the spit'n'spat about deviating from the official recommendations - just want realistic and logical advice.

Anyone that tells you you need to change your oil at 500 miles either owns a Jiffy Lube or is a completely dishonest dealer and one to definitely stay away from. As well you should get used to observing your car's built in service notifications. They work well enough to rely on them for regular maintenance.
Your fit has a oil life percentage gauge as well that is tied into the car's computer.

Good links. Hmmm... weird that there's no break-in write-up in your manual. Mine's an '08 and the write-up is in the "Before Driving" section of the manual.
Hey, we're all on this forum because we care about our cars (to different degrees of course). And everyone will have their take on how one thing is better than the other. Common sense and choice still prevails. Experience, manuals and other's recommendations are just added resources. Just my take.
Welcome aboard btw. Enjoy your new ride.

The only OM reference to "break in" precautions are -
During the first 600 miles (1,000 km) of operation,
avoid sudden acceleration or full throttle operation so
as to not damage the engine or powertrain.
Avoid hard braking for the first 200 miles (300 km).
You should also follow this when the brake pads are
replaced.
You could change the engine oil every day if desired. That would be expensive and unnecessary.
The OM advises -
Change the oil and filter in accordance with the Maintenance Minder message on the information display.
(If a message SERVICE does not appear more than 12 months after the display is reset, change the
engine oil every year.)

No, you didn't hurt your engine, but this is taken verbatim off American Honda's Owner Link site, specifically the Maintenance FAQ for the Fit:
"Why should I wait to change the oil the first time?
Your Honda engine was delivered with an oil that is specially formulated for new engines that have not yet developed their "natural" wear patterns and may contain minute particles from the manufacturing process.
American Honda strongly recommends this special oil be left in the engine long enough for these wear patterns to develop, usually until the first maintenance interval specified in your Owner's Manual, based on your specific driving conditions."
