Transmission service fluid

How often have you guys had this changed? I got a '07 fit with about 52 K on it and the dealership is telling me I need it changed already. Isn't this done when you are in the 100k miles? This use to be my moms car but she lost the Manuel book so I don't have anything so reference to. I took my car in for a new tire late in the day so they wouldn't have time to change it that day even if I thought it was okay

Dealers will try to sell you all sorts of service you don't need.

And by the way, changing the transmission oil is really easy, easier than changing the oil (although the fluid itself is more expensive than oil).

Here's a link to the owners manual:

Is it a manual or automatic transmission?

Manual trans fluid is recommended by Honda to be replaced every 60k or 2 years (whichever first). I'd recommend doing it every 45k or 2 years at max.

Auto. trans fluid is recommended by Honda to initially be replaced at 60k or 2 years as well then every 30k miles/2yrs afterwards. I would do it at every 30k at max.

While on the subject of fluid replacement, coolant is due for replacement every 5 years and brake fluid is recommended to be replaced every 3 years.

Thanks for link. My brother in law said he would do it. Never done it before but he agrees it seems straight forward

It's automatic. Thanks for the tips!

Don't forget the crush washers for the drain and fill ports.

Every two years??? Can you provide reference to the document (TSB) specifying that?????

Yeah, its in the 2008 Fit Owner's manual on page 185. Its the page that basically breaks down the coding for the Maintenance Minder.

My 2007 owners manual , p.173, section Maintenance minder, says " Driving in mountainous areas at very low (!) vehicle speeds results in higher transmission temperatures...If you regularly drive your vehicle under these conditions, have transmission fluid changed at 60,000 miles, then every 30,000 miles". Time interval in months is never mentioned!!
The TSB for transmission warranty service suggests technician to ignore fluid color but to pay attention to metal chunks found in the drain pan.
for the sake of lasting over 200000 miles the fluid can be changed even every second or third oil change (like on 1960's American cars), but I doubt that anyone will keep the modern car for longer than 10 years due to the probable electrical failures, thanks to the tiny wires and flimsy connectors.

so we're suppose to ignore the fluid color for all situations? i live in a flat area so i dont have to worry about mountains etc.

the only reason the tech mentioned my transmission fluid was he said it was brown and needs to be cherry red

This is true about Dexron and type F fluid.
My brake job customer with 08 Accord @ 150000 miles did two fluid changes at 70000 and 14000 miles; the car is driven mostly on freeways. So far there is no problems with transmission.
The fluid is reddish - brown color.

I change my automatic's transmission fluid every third oil change (which I do according to the built-in maintenance minder), so every 21k-24k; coolant and brake fluid every three years.

Best thing I've ever done was buy a small dry-erase board and keep track of future maintenance on it. "Change coolant & brake fluid first oil change of 2015." Work's wonders when you have a small fleet of vehicles to keep track of (Parent's, two sister's, grandma, etc).

Long life Honda coolant lasts 70 k miles or 8 years; changing it more often will not extend life of plastic to aluminum radiator rubber seals plastic heater valve or water pump sealed for life bearings.
In general you can put 50,000 miles in one year on Japanese car and it will not fail during this period but only few Japanese cars lasted 25 years as daily driver (body tends to rust, weak hardware, weak structure, scarce repair parts) If someone will like to keep car forever they should look for AMC Gremlin or Ford Pinto

You can't compare a Japanese car from 25 years ago to one today. Different body steel, for one thing, means less rust. And as far as parts? The Accord and Camry outsell almost every other car, so there will be parts.

Japanese cars made 25 or even 35 years ago were a lot easier to fix
Try to change starter on Fit without special tools
Not everyone drives Camry and Accord many people are driving smaller and cheaper cars
