Tranny fluid change?

The Honda Dealer told me I should get the transmission fluid changed - which apparently is part of the 30,000 mile service (I'm at 38,000). But when I mentioned it to the Monro Auto service guy, he said you shouldn't change the transmission fluid too often or you can damage the transmission, and he said I should wait until 60,000 miles. But he also said the dealer likes to push for more frequent transmission oil changes.

So what do you think, who should I listen to? I'm not worried about the price - it's like $60 for the dealer to do a flush and change, but I don't want to hurt the transmission either.

BTW this is a 2008 Fit Sport.

Just look at the owner's manual and follow what the people who made the car say.

not the people who service the car for profit.

I don't see how changing your transmission fluid often could damage your transmission... Unless you're doing it wrong.

OK I'll go by what the dealer says. Although it's a bit naive to think that the dealer doesn't service the car for profit. Ask any dealer and they'll tell you that the service area is the top money maker in the organization.

The manitenance minder will tell you when ATF change is required (I have over 60K miles and it has yet to show up on my MM), with the following exception from the owners manual:

Driving in mountainous areas at very low vehicle
speeds results in higher transmission temperatures.
This requires transmission fluid changes more
frequently than recommended by the maintenance
minder. If you regularly drive your vehicle under
these conditions, have the transmission fluid
changed at 60,000 miles (100,000 km), then every
30,000 miles (48,000 km) .

According to the factory service manual, a change consists of a simple drain and fill (2.5 quarts, about half of the trannys capacity), not an expensive flush dealers like to overcharge for.

That being said, I change my ATF every 30K miles. I do a drain and fill, drive to mix, and repeat. This gives me an approximately 75% fluid change. This is probably overkill.

agree with ken. just follow the minder. i'm at 53k and have not been prompted to change my fluid, though i have had certain dealers try to get me to do so with just routine oil changes.

@Kenchan: I've been doing smileys like that since 1996 but I guess they never caught on. It poses issues with certain industry standards like the tongue smiley :-P but can be overcome with a lower-case Q q-: and also the big laughing grin XD can be replicated with a CX.

So if you see my posts you'll no doubt see more "reverse" smileys although to me they look just fine (-;

my local guy who runs a transmission place says change it after 60,000 miles, but if it looks fine, you can go well beyond 60,000 before a change. <--that's from a guy who does nothing but transmissions.

Change your oil as necessary. If you're essentially stock, go with what your manual says.

...then there's people like me who run a KWSC on an AT. That my friend, needs a few more tranny fluid changes than you.
