Burnt coil pack question
Burnt coil pack question
2007 Fit with 78,000 miles.
I have the classic stuttering problems. The stutter started on idle at stop signs, then appeared when driving around 60 mph, is worse in wet weather, and recently has been awful with the A/C on.
I ordered 2 OEM replacement coil packs off of Amazon (Hitachi IGC0053), figuring I would try to see if I could fix the problem by replacing just one instead of all 4, and then have a backup on hand too.
Well, I pulled all 4 coil packs out, and one had a darker red boot and a burnt smell, so I figured that was the culprit. I replaced it. All was well, for a while.
Not long after (maybe 100 miles or so), the stuttering resurfaced. It was minimal at first, but now, a month later, it's terrible when the A/C is on.
Last weekend I tried adding dielectric grease to see if that could be a cheap fix. That didn't work. However, when I had the coil packs out, I noticed that my blue Hitachi replacement boot had the same burnt smell as the factory one it replaced.
So, not knowing a lot about cars, is the sparkplug frying the coil pack?
I figure my next step is to go ahead and replace all the sparkplugs (78k on the Fit and never replaced plugs) and see if that helps. Does that sound like a logical next step? I am afraid to replace the same coil pack again for fear of losing another $50, but it looks like maybe I'll have to once I replace the sparkplugs...
Thank you in advance!

bump, hoping to learn what would be the next option. One of the four coilpacks I replaced seemed to have burnt edges/tip on the boot of the coilpack. I should check the new one after 5000 miles to see if the same thing happens or not. My intuition says it's extra sparks that are traveling away from the spark plug and arcing somewhere else, which dielectric grease around the inside the boot should help, but not sure if that's a perfect solution.
My other question would be are you sure it's not the other non-replaced coilpacks causing issues? Some others point to the spacing on the sparkplugs as being a first step to solving the issue. Have you checked that?

I still find it humorous how many of these threads keep popping up.
the fit has two very known issues; intake valve lash being to loose and the exhaust lash being to tight, and the coil packs burning out.
due to the burning color around the colored part around the coil end, I would check to make sure the spark plugs are tight in the head.
when my coil pack gave me issues I just went to rockauto and replaced all 4 and also swapped to s2000 ik22 spark plugs with a .44 gap and that solved all my issues. I also check the valve lash every 40k miles just as a precaution.
if there is excessive stuttering, start checking the engine mounts, especially the lower transmission mount since they are also known to tear.

Hondafitty,
I ended up biting the bullet and replacing all 4 coil packs (bay #2 for the second time in a month) and also replaced all sparkplugs with OEMs.
Probably 1,000 miles since and no stutters. AC, rain, no matter - no stutters.
Still crossing my fingers that it won't come back later.
