Engine Sputter(?) in Reverse
Engine Sputter(?) in Reverse
Hello!
I have a 2007 Honda Fit with about 110,000 miles on it.
I did a previous post a while back regarding what I thought was a rough idle upon a cold start, and this is sort of an update and sort of a further question.
Upon starting my car after not using it for between 45 minutes to an hour, I put the car in reverse and the car started to have random spasms. Once I gave it some gas, however, it disappeared and it didn't do it again during the rest of the drive. I turned it off and turned it back on after about 30 seconds, and put it in reverse to see if it would happen again, and it didn't. I left it for about 30 minutes this time, and started it up again, and it did the same thing in reverse.
So far, it only happens in reverse, and after the car has been sitting for a while. It doesn't look like my RPMs drop, either, but I didn't pay that close of attention to it.
Any ideas? I'm hoping this isn't a gas pump issue... The car was well-maintained from the previous owner.

It COULD be a gasoline issue.
But you should read some of the Topics here about mis-fires (SEARCH: CONSTANT SPEED STUTTER). Sounds as if your issue is just beginning.
The Cliffs-Notes version:
1. Adjust valve lash
2. Replace sparkplugs (NGK OEM is best)
3. Replace coils (OEM or Hitachi part number ending in 053, only)

Just as an update, I let it sit for around 4 hours this time, and was exiting a parking lot in Drive this time, and it did the same thing while idle waiting to exit the lot. I did notice that the RPMs were slightly above 1000.
Hopefully this narrows down the issue a bit more?

We can't tell, nope that doesn't narrow it down at all.
What you need to do is:
1. Remove and check spark plugs. (If they have never replaced, they are DUE FOR REPLACEMENT. Honda recommends a 110K replacement interval)
2. adjust valve clearance. Another 110K mile recommendation by Honda.
3. Still get misfiring when cold? Replace all the coils. (If one is weak, they all are about to go)
If you DIY, you can do all the above for ~$250 USD as Empire said. If you have an independent mechanic do everything, it would probably add 3 - 4 hours of labor cost. Just make SURE they use the parts specified or "You'll Be Baaaccck".
Lets us know how it turns out...
