Laws on position of the exhaust?

Wondering, are there any laws in california that forbid the exhaust being on the side of the car, wanted to end my tailpipe/muffler design to go out the sides of the car.

so i could modify the trunk area (extending the spare tire area to go from one end to the other to fit more junk in my trunk).

if there are no real problems with the law, then i can see about getting a custom muffler made (don't care about sound or looks of it, it's about my stereo in the trunk =P

They do have laws pertaining to where the exhaust is. For example on a pick up truck it must go back behind the cab of the truck. I'm sure it has to go back past the cabin of the Fit to ensure no gasses get in. Best to check with DMV for sure. Great idea but you don't want to kill yourself afterwards,,,,

maybe you could just call the DMV instead of making a trip, since the lines are probably going to be epic (like they always are). or call a local sheriff's department and ask (don't call 911).

Are you talking about it still coming out the rear of the car just to the side; like after the rear tire?

Or an actual side-exit before the rear tire. I had a side-exit done (Ive had it on my Mx6 and my Probe GT) theres not much room for a decent sized muffler. Both my cars are turbo so they werent that loud. The Fit will be loud with a side-exit. I had plans on doing this to my Fit but I decided to keep my daily at a lower tone.

Just do it and see if you get pulled over. *shrugs*

i don't want to get pulled over, and i had plans for the rear/trunk storage area without the plumbing down there, but after talking to Pab, he said there is no room for the cat/muffler if it's shortened, that's if i want to keep the noise level down too.
