Question about intake

Hi guys

thinking about fitting a pod filter in my 07 VTEC Jazz (M/T). I took a peek at my engine bay last nite and found out that the engine will only be sucking in hot air since the engine bay is so tiny and so close to the engine. For me, proper cold air intake is out of the question, coz I live in Indonesia and the streets are frequently flooded. So, I'm not even considering of getting CAI.

I've come up with an idea to use short ram intake and use some sorta flexible pipe to channel air from the lower front grille. One end of the pipe is located just behind the grille and the other just sit underneath/on the side of the air filter to give a "ramming" effect when the car is moving. Thats the reason why I'm planning to put the pipe at the front rather than behind the fender well.

Has anyone done this before? If yes, can you post up pics of the finished product? Hope my theory doesnt sound too stupid

thanks guys

It's not stupid at all, in fact Claymore did that if I recall with his Fit and I know I've seen a number of JDM Fits with the same idea applied. Do a search in the DIY thread as I think that's where Claymore's thread about this is hiding.

I always got told that air ducts don't really have any benefit until around 70mph??

I don't know if its true or not, but what i was told.

that makes sense...but i reckon it really depends on the placement of the duct. If it's placed where it can direclty cathces the air without obstruction, maybe you can feel the benefit well before 70mph..IMHO

btw..been browsing the searched pages and I still cant find anything about this air duct thingy..can any1 give me a direction or two?

thanks

I had a look down my engine bay the other day..theres 1 pipe linked to the intake box to draw air from somewhere. I cant determine where (mine has the 07 Asian market model, so the bumper is different from those of the USDM ones) it draws air from. so, where does it draw air from? Is it from behind the bumper where the smaller intake 'mouth' is?

If it's from behind the fender, I dont think its good enough. I'm planning to place an intake duct behind the lower smaller grille to give a ramming effect. Any suggestion?

I dunno with the bends and stuff if I would really want to go through the effort to see a little if any improvement. I would get a chambered intake before going and messing with the bumper etc. But don't can't the J's air duct fit ur bumper?

not stupid at all. Haven't seen it really done on a Fit, but it's called a Velocity stack =) Check out some Mugen RSX's they have a sort of hole cut into the bumper and a hose runs from that hole toward the intake. I've seen it done in a ghetto fashion in a lot of other cars, including Integras. Find an area you think works well, get like a funnel of sorts, maybe some PVC pipe or rubber tubing and work that thing. Make it look clean!

here is the mugen rsx

and here's an example of a velocity stack that looks pretty cool.. made by BLOX

The comptech Icebox also uses a similiar method of taking in cold air yet looking like a stock airbox that does not have the filter sitting low. Check those out for further examples.

I like this, if you can get this stack and make the straightest line going to ur intake it would be good. imo

those things look awsome..but I'd think twice cutting a hole on my bumper ehhe..I might try putting the hose just behind the lower side front grille..as marked below..

does anyone with JDM bumper know if it's possible to fit air duct behind the marked grille?
