07 with 09 power?

just wondering where the extra torque and hp are comong from. is it from new intake/exhaust setups, bigger tb, new engine internals, updated ecu? can we retrofit to our current gen fits to get the same numbers via bolt ons?

The 2009 fit has a new 1.5liter i-vtec engine.

The head is different. I still havent seen a picture of the new motor. Im willing to bet its reversed; intake mani in the rear and the exhaust mani up front.

I'm willing to take that bet. Seeing how every new Honda motor is Intake in the Front and Exhaust in the Rear (K series, R series, and I guess even the L series).

were pre-2000 honda motors mostly, if not all, designed with intake mani in back and exhaust mani in front? and i remember there was something about honda crankshafts rotating in the opposite direction of most other manufacturers'? (not sure about that one though)

You can learn a lot about the different VTEC's on wikipedia.

VTEC - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Also there is a great movie on how I-VTEC works in the R18 engine in the 06,07,08 civic's (not si). I recommend this movie to everyone who want's to know what i-vtec is all about!

hmmm, i wonder if the new L15 could be a bolt-in replacement for our current L15's? Or at the very least, swap heads to gain the i-Vtec >_<. Should be a rather inexpensive swap to do, if possible and would increase the performance potential of the motor by quite a bit.

The R18 is mounted exhaust in the front intake in the back.

i-Vtec would be a waste to put in unless all you want is MPG. It's designed to retard the cam profiles under cruise and light load conditions to save gas. When accerating it runs the engine regularly. All of which is the same that our vtec in the current L15 is doing, but the i-Vtec reads a lot more variables to make the gas saving more effecient. From a performance stand point there would be no benefit from changing vtec to i-vtec.

I saw a dyno curve of the new L15 vs the old L15 and it showed more top end, also. Are you sure it doesn't also advance the cam timing during heavy load?

totally true. its not to say that ivtec doesn't have its performance potential is its present in both interations of the current type r civic and on our si. it just so happens that this i vtec is tuned more economy. it delivers good power (a 8 hp bump, not sure of the tq) so it DOES increase power, but no so much that a swap could be justified.

If i were to swap this engine in, it would be for added smoothness and mpg, but not so much for performance.

its complicated, hell even the links provided can be a bit complicated.

I've always looked at it as a step type procedure as opposed to a one off sort of thing like regular vtec, which requires the engine to reach certain rpms for it to engage. I vtec is always 'on' so to speak, and it has different operating modes that start very early on on the rev range.

Smile i Vtec

Thought i-Vtec just meant the valves open more and more as RPM's are increased (lets say 3,700 RPM's....partial valves opening...as RPM's increased more i-Vtec opens valves more.) Unlike the Vtec which engages all valves opening at once at the same time (lets say 3,700 RPM's.... BAM Full Vtec)
