Purpose of Oil Catch Can

Hi guys,

I noticed that some members have installed an oil catch can on their FI cars.. whats the purpose of having one of these and are they worth the money?

It catches the excessive build of carbon and sludge from both your engine and intake system. hmmm do I think it is worth it that I can't say. I have it on my track car and once a while when I check I get some but not a lot. Some guys made their own catch can for about $20 I think.

Highly recommended on FI cars mounted between the PCV and intake.
Without a catch-can, all that oil/carbon gunk builds-up and can cause pre-igntion (pinging) over time.

Oh did not realize that he is FI. I should have read the posting a bit more careful. If that is the case then I would suggest it. You definitely would like a healthy and clean engine.

When you're FI you're introducing positive crank case pressure. That will cause oil and fumes to spew out from the valve cover hole. A catch can will "catch" the oil and fumes.

Ya, I ended up picking up a GReddy Oil Catch Can from my local shop.. they cut me a deal on it so it was pretty cheap. Just gotta find a spot to cram it into the engine bay now.. so limited on space now

can you post pictures yeefit? what hoses did you connect to it?

Ya, give me a couple days... the GReddy can that I bought came with hoses and it simply goes inbetween the head and the intake.

To be honest, I've had mine in for a while now and my hoses are clear and there is no sign of any oil going in so I'm not sure if its necessary. I haven't really driven my car really hard tho since its winter here and I still need to install my clutch and mounts

sugarphreak posted a picture of inside his weapon r intake and there was quite a bit of oil residue built up on the walls. i figure this is more of a safety precaution than anything.

Oil fumes also knock down the octane rating of your gas. Can cause serious problems in a FI car.

i was thining of installng an oil catch can, but dont really want the extra part to be jammed in the engine or more work...so im just going to install a breather filter on the PCV and clean it every few weeks.

anyone know of any problems io might have? im kinda new to FI...

I agree with that statement,

A catch-can is pretty much a must on any FI vehicle. Even people with stock turbo's should be considering one, I have seen a few threads on the BMW 1-Series website that show how much stuff it actually prevents from re-entering the engine and it is gross.

so where do you connect the hoses that are routed to the catch can?
im rather new to the forced induction.

PCV valave -> catch can -> intake

there is already a hose that connects the pcv to the intake, the catch can simply goes in-line to prevent any blow-by from entering the intake.
