New Member looking for advice

Hello fitfreaks!

I'd like to start by saying I have been browsing your forum for months and I have learned a lot! That being said I always planned on my first post being a more casual hello. Sadly that is not the case.

About 8 months ago I got a 07 fit with 80k miles. She was running great with just a few cosmetic blemishes. Over the last couple months I've been sorting those out and generally just being a good car owner. Always doing oil changes on time, checking fluids and just paying attention to the car. I love my fit.

So the other day I started her up to hear I low squeaking noise which I attributed to something being wet bc I had just washed the car. I didn't make it down the block before it started running on 3 cylinders. I'm thinking it's a spark plug or a coil pack so I turn around and before I made it back home I heard a loud noise and the check engine light started flashing car shuts off. I attribute to the noise to some sort of mechanical damage and decide this is out of my realm of the usual maintenance mechanics I perform on my vehicles. So I have her towed to my mechanic who thinks it's going to be a coil pack or sparkplug. I forget how he phrased it but he said a spark had been pushed out of place and taken all the threads with it. He put a camera down inside and saw scratches or possibly cracks on the piston. He then Re threaded and replaced the plug and coil and started it up. The motor runs but is tapping bad and doesn't idle.

Here's where your advice comes in. He is suggesting a "new" used motor bc it is cheaper to replace with a used one than it would be to work on this motor. So he quoted me $2270 for a used motor with 72k miles. This comes with a 6 month unlimited mile warranty. Obviously I'm a little shell shocked at having to replace the motor but I'm trying to analyze and get all the info before I do anything.

Do you think I need a new motor?
Does this price seem fair?
What questions should I be asking about the warranty?
What questions should I be asking?
Can the car run perfect with a "new" used motor in it?
How do you think I should proceed?

I love my fit and would hate to see her condemned before 100k miles. I'm also afraid of replacing the motor and having reliability issues.

I'm looking for any advice.

I'm sorry if I posted in the wrong area or have the wrong etiquette.

Thanks in advance,
Andy

Welcome to the forum Andy.
That's a very unfortunate 1st post and it's awful that your engine is already busted. I thought Honda's were famous for reaching 200K miles fairly easily, that's one of the reasons I got my Fit.
Possibly the previous owner was revving the engine hard before it was at operating temperature. You should never rev past 3K until after the engine warms up (5 min driving).
A used engine correctly installed should bring years of use, as long as it was not abused like the engine you currently have. I don't know if you can find out the condition of the "new" used engine.
Try to post this thread in a more specific section of the forum for more feedback from experienced/knowledgeable members.
Good luck with fixing your Fit!

Hondas are awesome I had a 2003 civic and put on 249,000 miles on it with no problems at all. I did sell it at 249,000 miles and it still had the factory original clutch in it yet. Was the best car I ever owned, But then again I always maintained it too. I just now bought a 2010 Fit about 2 months ago with 52,000 miles on it n I love it, well so far anyway. I agree it's all in how it was taken care of during its life. The Fit that I just bought looks brand new n sounds n rides like its good n tight. Maintenance records show that he took care of it but time will tell. Was there a compression test done on your engine? If so how were the numbers on each cylinder? If you do replace with a used engine I would also give it a compression test too n to watch them do it if poss. A used engine is a crap shoot as well as a new engine can be. Is that a good price to replace it with a used engine I couldn't tell you but I am sure that members will chime in on that one. If the engine was taken good care of n has good compression ect it could run like new in your car, Since it will have 6 months warranty with unlimited miles I would be driving it a lot to see how it holds up. I would also want to know what the warranty would cover and also have it in writing!!! The warranty should cover the complete engine n the installing of the engine. Who is doing the job? Is it Honda? This "new" used engine also has 72,000 miles on it, Yes Honda has good quality that's for sure but again who owned it before n was it maintained good? I wish you a lot of luck!!!
